OIL LEAKING>>>>>>>>>>>
« on: July 08, 2006, 06:03:49 PM »

Two days ago I went out for a short ride.....in the way back to home we were caught for a thunderstorm and heavy rain.....when were close to get home and ready to make a left turn the driver in the cage next to me said....your bike is leaking oil...I didn't pay attention because I thought that was a joke....when we were around 3 miles away I had a bad feeling because I could hear a bad noise from the engine and in the first opportunity I stopped ....At that time the oil light (the red one) came on and I could notice that all the bike from the front cylinder to the rear was oily....there was oil everywhere!! [smiley=nervous.gif] Fortunately there was someone else in the house and I remembered that  had several quarters of SE oil so I was able to pour 3 quarters in order to get the house. When I got in the garage the bike was again empty of oil and there was a trace of oil from the place where I stooped until the garage. I took the bike to the stealer today (in a trailer of course) and the service advisor who I use to deal with thinks that the cause was a hose between the oil filter and the oil cooler because the leak came from the voltage regulator and he explained to me that he oil cooler is next to that......so that is the sad story......Any of you guys have had this problem?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Yeah if one of those hoses got a decent size hole in it you could lose some oil real quick....not to mention end up with a really slick rear wheel.  Hope ya got it before any damage.

Was talking with a guy at a gas station in NC this past weekend...he knew a lady rider who had the same problem...the hose nearly came off!!!  Temporary fix, but then happened again...trailered it to a dealer to finally get it fixed.  Man, I hope you caught it in time and suffered no damage... My bike had the same problem and a line had to be replaced. Dealer said it was in one of the preformed lines coming from the cooler that had a crack in it. He said it was a rare thing for that dealership to see. (Now I'm begining to wonder how rare this problem is?)
Mabye a bad batch of oil lines?

On our trip to OKC  (Sparks Rally) 20 miles into the trip I notice OIL all over my faring and windshield and thought it was coming from my buddies brand new Street Glide that he just bought but come to find out it was coming from ArkieNuke’s bike.  I pulled up beside him and pointed to his engine and he pulled over and what we found is the oil line hose to the oil cooler had rubbed a hold in it. Lost almost all the oil in the engine (Poor routing rubbing on frame).  Went to the auto parts store bought new hose, 3 qts of oil and off we went again.  Didn’t think about it too much then but my Front BRAKES were soaked with OIL, which got my attention really quick.  Took a while to dry them out.

So if you are ridding behind some one's who looses oil ALWAYS be sure to check your brakes.  I didn’t think that I was splattered with that much oil, but no brakes sure gets ones attention QUICK!!!!!!

Bubba,

One thing about oil soaked brakes, they last a  r-e-a-l-l-y   l-o-n-g   t-i-m-e.  ;)    In all seriousness, you really should remove the pads and thoroughly clean them and the rotors with brake cleaner.  If the pads are worn, might be a good time for a replacement set.

I think that the hose need some sort of protective covering over the hose, this has happen twice to buddies bikes that I ride with and none of them had a protective cover over the hoses....But you know what they say... an ENGINEER's dream is a TECHICIAN's nightmare. ;D
