I have the new TTS Mastertune (old screaming eagle tuner) it is not EPA compliant so you have to promise when you down load the program it is for off road use only..........right...!!  anyway, you can change just about any perimeter on the fuel system and engine management, including RPM, and turn the ACR's off or on, heat management off or on, just to mention many of the features of the TTS Mastertune system.  Very small fits under the seat and actually reprograms the stock ECM, you can remove it after tune your bile, and is not an add on along with the stock ECM like the Power Commander.  Tuners love them.

The banging noise on my 08 SE3 was the compensator.  Changed to the new SE compensator, what a major difference with ease of starting with no banging, gears shift smoother, easier to find neutral and the first gear clunk noise is reduced.

Hi,
Having same problem with my 07 FLHTCUSE2. just wondering is the compensator the same item as a starter clutch? Is it a big job to replace these items?
Thanks,

No..the compensator is not the same item as the starter clutch.

The compensator mounts to the left end of the crank and is part of the mechanism within the primary that connects the motor to the transmission via the primary drive chain...  I believe the most current part number is 40274-08A.

See the attachment - it shows both the 40274-08 and newer 40274-08A compensator kits.

If your mechanically inclined, it's a relatively easy replacement item...

It's an easy job, just need a breaker bar and torque wrench.

While you're in there, consider swapping out the tensioner for the Hayden M6.  Maybe even try the BDL compensator, if you want to get really exotic.

I had a loud bang last weekend starting mine over. Scared the crap out of me as it sounded like the type of thing that causes engine damage. Engine stopped cranking but I'm pretty sure I let go of the starter from flinching.

Over 11k miles, and that's the first I've heard it. Tried starting again and it fired right up no problem. I've done nothing to mine ('12) since I bought it, other than HD installing pipes & the related tuner before I rode her home from the dealership.

Was wondering if I'd see it reappear or forget all about it and then stumble across this thread... Now you've got me wondering. Seems like the type of thing HD would not do much about if it doesn't come back, and therefore can't be reproduced.

When there is a sudden bang on start up it gets your attention  :nervous:
Purchased a new HD 96ci quite a few years ago, my first twincam. High flow cleaner and slipons fitted during pre delivery.

When I picked the bike up it started and rode OK to me, remember this is my first twin cam after riding a 1340 for over a decade  :)

A few days later I hit the start button and there was a tremendous BANG sound, ambient temp was quite warm, about 32 deg c what I can remember but temp should not cause a BANG on start up, there was also bad engine knock.

Turned out engine was running way to lean. No tuner to compensate for mods.

I asked questions about a tuner at the time I discussed the mods and was told by the dealer it was not necessary  :nixweiss:

Went back a few weeks later to discuss the issue and was abused by the dealer, this was a few weeks after purchasing a new bike off them, made me feel sick kept my cool and just walked off in discuss. Customers in shop just looked on as dealer was going off his head.

Did some homework and purchased a tuner, installed and did a few data runs, bike has run like a dream ever since and continues to run without any issues  :)

Didn't bother to get any help from dealer, lost confidence in them after the drama, thought they knew what they were doing owning a dealer ship.

This has got to be the worse experience I have had in a dealership in the 35 years of riding, so in a professional manner I went back the following working day after the dust settled to ask what the problems was (thought there was something I said or did) and was bluntly told to f*** off, no quite in those words but I got the message.
What did I do  :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: just wanted to ask a question and dealer got defensive. Why? have never got an answer or maybe he was just having a bad day.

Sorry for getting off the track but with my experience it could be tuning if it only does it now and then.
