Suggested cams for 2006 CVO ultra?
« on: July 18, 2012, 10:30:26 PM »

Hi All,
A friend of mine has a 2006 CVO Ultra with the 103" motor. Right now he just has slip ons and he wants me to do some performance work. I was curious which cam works best with the stock heads as an all around performer. Any suggestions? I presume the cam swap is similar to a 2008 96"??
Thanks,
J.

Zippers (Redshift) and Freedom Cycles (Yuill Bro's) have designed bolt in cams for the CVO 103 motors. Check out these threads...

Thanks  a ton for the links. He wants me to do the research and install but I'm a little apprehensive about suggesting something I've never used.

The cam change is a bit different between a 1999-2006 Twin Cam and the 2007 and later Twin Cams due to the different design of the cam plates and chain tensioners, but if you can handle one you can easily handle the other.  The first thing you need to determine is if he wants to stick with the original style cam plate and tensioners, or convert everything to the new style.  It can be done a couple different ways, with a special kit Harley developed that still uses roller/ball bearings for the cams in the plate, or by changing everything to the 2007 and later parts.  The choice will make a difference when ordering cams.  Or of course he could opt for gear drives, but that is more involved and highly dependent on the amount of crank runout.

Jerry

Edit:  I forgot to mention one other thing that will affect the actual installation.  The old style cam and plate uses press fit bearings, unlike the new style.  So you will need special tools and a press if you use the old style parts.

No, complete rebuild as I lost an inner rear inner cam bearing & you know what that does.  So, basic street port, Yuill Bros Pistons @ 10.25  195ccp  YB13's & the Yuill Elite D Exhaust

IME with my '06 CUSE when it was time to replace the OE SE 253 cam with stock heads,, i found that to be a touchy choice,, here's why, the stock heads flow nice but yield very low compression 8.8:1  :'(
the cams listed above may work with stock heads on the dyno graph,,, but in real streetable performance they are going to lack in the belt of where most riders ride... if i were going to do it over again leaving the heads alone, replacing the cam only,,, i would update to the roller link style tensioners with higher rate oil pump, bolt in a Andrews 37N along with a good pipe & tuner on hand and ride it!
Period..... and all on a very affordable budget too.

My .02 on the above topic

I just went finished putting in the Zippers 575 chain drive cam in my 06 cvo. I have stock head pipes, rinehart slipons , K&n filter and a power commander. Everything else is stock. I just had it dynotuned at 94 Hp and 109 torque, and I can tell you it is like riding a different bike. THe torque is just where i like it, and no pinging whatsoever.

Here is one with a andrews 54 cam.. we did do a 107 kit as well, I would not think the numbers are going to change enough to go that route unless its needed.. Fo what was done I was impressed with how the set up worked. Tons of great cams out there..  And that one I pulled out further even though it stopped making power  ;D  Just for you Harry.. LOL

andrews 21 or 26`s are also a good choice for "cam only" changes

No its Freds bike.. the amount of cams out there is amazing, some days just too many, other days it great as a fair amount of guys love trying new things on there bike..

Got a guy that has a t max and he does all his own self tuning and then comes in to see what the final numbers are,,, maybe 5th cam.. 3 or 4 custom made baffles ( he is taking metal shop at the college).

he is on the spark plug road now. LOL

Funny some days ..
