110th Anniversary? Seriously Who cares!!
« on: September 05, 2012, 07:47:12 AM »

Are we a flock of stupid sheep just following the Harley marketing people?  95th anniversary, 110 anniversary, Who cares!!  Do you fall for this crap from any other mfg?

I went to a couple of local Harley steelers to get a price on trading my flawless 14k 09 CVO ultra in on a new one of the same. I was quoted money differences of anywhere between 14k and 17k .They all had the same line"but this is the 110 anniversary"  big deal! It's the same bike I have in another color!! A dollar a mile to ride a CVO? Are we all idiots. For what thy want difference I can buy a new bike and keep mine.

I think I will go to plan b. 21 inch front wheel with 17 rear with 200 tire, legend air suspension, progressive mono tubes Andrews 54 cam, s&s stealth air cleaner , Thundermax, 575 chubby bars, and a few more.

Will cost less than 1/3 of a new bike.

Could not agree more!!!
I barely even remember my wedding anniversary. :o
Just another day/year.
I talked to a salesman just for grins about a trade and they offered me 23k for my extremely clean 09USE4 with 27k on it.
I laughed and pointed out to him the asking price they had on the used 2010 Ultra limited, 21k.  I realize they need to make money but apparently the 2010 ultra limited only lost 3k off its original price where my 09 CVO had lost 15k.
Not to mention the freight, shipping, handling that is dust in the wind.
It is this kind of reality that makes me think my next bike will not be a new one.

Could somebody please take really good care of your 2012 SESG and keep the miles low and I would like you to add the full sized tour pak.  And if it is not to much trouble switch out the 407's for some Dunlop Elites.  We will talk in 2014 when the new updated HD's come out. :huepfenlol2:

It's not the late 80's or any of the 90's anymore when you could ride it a couple years and get back what you paid new in trade....boy, do I miss those days... :'(

Jaymedic, it breaks the heart to have a bike you know is worth more than trade and have a dealer look you in the face and tell you it's not.  Keeping in tune with your subject, the anniversary models will carry a bit more leverage in trading but not anywhere near the premium they carry when new.  The 100 anniversary carried it longer than most but when the MOCO changed the frame and such on the touring bikes in 09, that pretty much took the 08's and older, no matter what they are, down a bit in trade.  I personally like the 08/older frame (had 4 of them over a 15 year period).  My 1989 glide was probably the best handling touring bike I EVER owned...don't have an explaination there but that baby would hug the corners better than any other HD I've owned except maybe the current bike but that's another story...

Anyway, we all drink the koolaid as we all (on this site anyway) have CVO's and while they do bring a better trade-in than the standards, they listed for much more, too so it's really a wash anyway you look at it.  I paid WAY too much for my SESG (paid list but dang....) but it shore is purdy....... :bananarock: :bananarock:

I agree with you 100%.....    Certainly a lot cheaper to buy new tin when you feel like you need somthing different.  A Harley is a Harley and will always be the same until they water cool em...  Want a new one,,  just switch the look  :2vrolijk_21:

First, Harleys are overpriced, I dont think anyone will argue that point, except Harley.

Second, the dealer only cares about the bottom line.  23k for an 09, I think thats a pretty good offer from a dealer on a 3-4 year old bike.

A SE Harley is a luxury, not a necessity.  Luxury items cost more, so if you want to play you have to pay.

I think I've been commenting on that for several years now.  And yes, many of Harley's customer's are basically sheeple who buy into anything that emanates from the ivory tower in Milwaukee.  It's the only reason Harley has survived and made lots of bucks over the past couple decades; people buying into hype and lifestyle, and paying way too much for products of questionable real value.

Most companies celebrate the big milestones like 50 or 100 years, but Harley now thinks they can con the folks every 5 years.  And the sheeple seem to agree.  Look at a thread that was started recently about a CVO Anniversary RG Custom that's currently on ebay.  The bike has an MSRP of $34k, and this guy bought it and immediately put it on ebay and the high bid was well over $40k last time I looked.  Made a big issue that it was #001 out of 900.  BFD!

The anniversary models all cost $1000 more than the regular models, and you get a little badge along with a different paint job.  Whoop-de-doo!  And then of course you have the anniversary motorclothes Harley is pushing in their current emails and ads, and I'm sure we will see a lot of other overpriced "anniversary" crap being pushed throughout the year as well.

Thankfully I don't personally care about Harley's anniversaries, so I won't be one of the sheeple wasting money on all the hype.  For those who do, we will probably see threads in a few years from them complaining about how that super special anniversary model has lost resale value just like the regular models.  And of course those same folks will also be first in line for the new 115th anniversary model, for which they will pay too much again.  Duh!

I could see the 100th many many years form now, but as you see, no one is going out of their way to get one and they sure as hell are not bringing any more money...  I just order the the "regular" cvo.

Went to the 100th anniversary bash in Milwaukee and it was great - well except for Elton, lol.  One hundred years in business and the only surviving American motorcycle manufacturer is a big deal.  After that it is just marketing hype.  Who cares?  :nixweiss:  Not me.  ;D

Exactly.  HD is no different than most manufacturers.  I do chuckle at how many people get offended that their 2 year old bike lost value yet they are the ones continually trading up every couple of years for the new color!  These are no different than cars now; CVO or not, that bike lost a ton of value the second you drove it off the lot.
