I've been trying search out a small leak that I thought was the primary ever since the dealer installed my DD6 in my 2006 SEUC.

I finally got it up on the lift, and with a mirror it now appears that it's coming out of the trans where the shifter rod linkage comes out.

Does anyone know how hard this is to replace the washer or O-ring, or whatever that must seal this? I'm hoping I can take care of this without having to open up the trans?

Anyone have any tips on getting this done DIY?

It's called a shift shaft seal.  Unless the Harley branded seal has improved the seal from Cometic is a much better part.  It's cheap either way.  Outer and inner primary both have to come off to change it though.  So it's a fair bit of labor.

This should give a better idea.  You can see the shift shaft sticking out with the washer and snap ring on it.  The seal is right behind the big washer. 

No way to the shift lever off, nor the snap ring, with the inner primary in place.  Have to strip everything off the left side.

Do as Don stated and replace with a double lip seal from Cometic (HD is a single lip)..  They come 5 in a pack from Cometic..

That gets expensive fast.  Would have paid for a good torque wrench, mainshaft nut socket and a couple of other big sockets the first time through.  After that you could have the outer and inner off yourself for clutch or any other maintenance that might come up.

Good luck getting it sorted.  Will keep the finger crossed this is your last time in there .

1 1/2" and 1 3/16 for the comp and clutch nuts.  Clutch nut is left hand thread.  Just standard impact sockets for those.  You'll also need a deep socket that comes with a pilot for the mainshaft nut.  It's a specialty piece, not just a normal deep socket.   Take a look here:

Also very handy is a locking bar to hold the comp and clutch assemblies in place while tightening.  Possible without it.  But often a pain in the ass.  Worth the few bucks it costs.  See here:

Oh, one other thing, does your torque wrench measure when pulling counterclockwise?  Not all do.  You'll need to tighten the left handed thread nuts.

Thanks. Yes, I have a set of Craftsman Digit Torques 3/8" and 1/2" but I'm not sure what torque they go up to.  Do you know what is the ft/lbs spec for the comp nut?

Pull it to 90 ft pds.  Then use a marker on the comp nut and parts behind it.  After 90 ft pds pull it another 45 degrees.

That ends up being in the neighborhood of a 150 ft pds pull.  So eat your Wheaties.

Harley changed that tightening spec six years ago or so.  Had trouble with comp nuts coming loose and went from a straight pull to that pull and angle.  It worked too.  Loose comp nuts mostly went away after that.

I was just told that Harley has changed the seal to a HD branded cometic. No validate though.
Baker also carries a double lip seal and recommends it when doing the DD6, along with the baker bearing.

I haven't found it yet, but either the case - primary O-ring is leaking or the shift seal is, along with the outer gasket.
My shifter is tight and may be leaking. Kathy's shifter wobbles and doesnt leak, go figure.
