Going with a new 120R!
« on: October 26, 2012, 07:14:55 PM »

After a lifter failure in our 2010 CVO Ultra, my wife and I have decided to step up to a 120R. Thanks to the many who offered advice in another (sorry I jacked it) thread on this motor change including:
Unbalanced, sadunbar, DCfiremann, Hillsidecycle, and Maladjusted.

It was a tough decision whether to build up our "old" (25,000 miles) 110, by making it into a 117, or whether to go for a 120R. After hearing both pros and cons regarding the 120R we decided to go ahead and take a chance on the 120R. It seemed like the 117 could be built to be a very reliable motor, but the cost would be pretty high. While the 120R is not inexpensive by any means, it looks like the more cost effective approach -at least as long as it holds together. I've heard some good reports on the 120R and am hoping it will be a good motor.

We are making a few changes before the motor goes in, including:
TMan 662-1 cams
S&S lifters
HPI 55mm modified stock throttle body
5.3 gm/sec SE injectors
Ventilator A/C
Roller Rockers and Billet Supports

We're also upgrading the clutch and installing one of Bud's oil coolers.

Many thanks to sadunbar for sharing his time and answering a bunch of questions!

Ralph

PS -Even though our 110 is the charcoal gray, we don't mind the new motor color being black. We're more interested in the better performance!  8)

Here's a photo of the lifter that started our 120R motor change. It looks pretty bad for only 25,000 miles! You can see a flat spot where the chunking became bad enough that the roller couldn't roll anymore, and just started sliding. It squeaked and chirped pretty badly at that point, at least until the knocking noise started...

Those upgrades sounds as if that'll really roll!!
FYI, we have air filter elements for that air cleaner, that are twice the thickness of the OEM unit. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for the tips Hillsidecycle and prodrag1320. I'll have to see how much knee room I have with the Ventilator A/C -it will be new to my bike. I've only run the SE Stage 1, for 2010 CVO "football" air cleaner (with K&N filter) before this. Is your 2X element a K&N or similar? And does it come with a rain sock?

Prodrag1320, I've already got a BDL BTXP-14 (extra plate) clutch kit installed. If it doesn't work out, I'll definitely check out the Bandit Sportsman. Thanks for the info!

bikerboy53, congradulations on your decision. I don't now if you are going to repair your old engine, but when I swapped out the built 80 incher I had in my EVO for an S&S 107, I sold the original engine for $2650.00. which brought my costs down quite a bit. Of course I went to DMV and had title changed to reflect new engine serial number so If I ever sell it  there will be no issues.CAHDBIKER

i think the 120" is a good idea also.
noticed the roller on the lifter.  that seems to be a issue and it has happened to the 120" motors also.  its not a 96"103,110" issue its all of  them like many issues are. if it happens to a motor  thats still under warrenty it can be paid for but the motor co. if you get a 120" and it happens , no warrenty..   they may have addressed the issue but never know.. the 120" could be a good deal if it holds up.

In his first thread Bikerboy said that he had installed S & S lifters, so normally, this will avoid a lifter issue.

maybe  valve springs  or something else in the heads cause the lifter to puke?

FWIW, S&S 124"ers @ $6295.00, with higher quality component parts/materials, carry a 1 year warranty, and are manufactured by the same company that performs the re-man program for the Moco.....................S&S. :)
