Leather TourPak Problems
« on: September 16, 2006, 08:41:38 PM »

Has anyone noticed any problems with the lid rubbing the bottom edge and causing the leather to wear through?
I noticed this starting in July when on vacation in Maggie Valley. On my way home we stopped at Battlefield HD in Gettysburg and when leaving the dealer another CUSE was pulling in, guys name was Terry, we started to talk about some of the problems we each had with the bikes. His tour pak lid rubbed 4 holes through along the edge that was each about 1" to 2" long. He was headed inside to tell them about it. I have 2 spots that are about 1/2" long.

The chafing is being caused by the lump that is from the seam in the leather that is folded around the lid edge.
Here is some pictures of where it is rubbing.

Just remember you HAVE NEVER CARRIED ANYTHING OVER 10LBS ON YOUR LUGGAGE RACK (if it's like mines that is the recommended maximum weight). ;)

Matter of fact I've never seen you carry anything on that luggage rack. ;D

Has anyone removed their leather tour pak and replaced it with a regular ULTRA tour pak? I think the bike would look a lot better. I know there is an amp under the tour pak. Any other issues. Everone probably knows someone who is an expert painter who coild match the pattern. I remember someone on this site 7-9 months ago showing what a green CUSE would look like if it was painted. ANYONE???????????? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

If I remember correctly and haven't had too many vodka tonics that was a photoshop pic and looked real cool. That being said talk to a better dealer and they can refer you to a painter locally that is Harley approved, accepted, certified, tolerated or whatever term works best, but someone that they work with that has access to the proper paint codes and paints reasonably and can do the work. I know I am toying with the idea of a fatboy fender on a SEEG painted to match the 04 O/B SEEG and a local dealer has a guy all set up that can mimmick the original. I just have to wrestle my brain away from the concern that I would be exposing my oil cooler to too much damage by going with the shorter fender. I had it ordered and it came in just before the new 07's came out, before it arrived I got cold feet thinking about the oil cooler, then the 07 SERK came out with an 18" front wheel and a fatboy fender and the oil cooler - so apparently HD isn't as concerned about it as me, am I too concerned about it or what? As is I clean the oil cooler out weekly or biweekly as it already gets gunk in it, gotta think the shorter one will cause more problems, but I digress, I have thought since the first 06 CUSE's came out a painted tour pak would be bad as@#@...go for it, and post pics!!!!!

Yeah, I've got it also- Let us know what the rep has to say, However I think it will come under normal wear the bike virbates and causes the lid to rub on the seams. My tour pack on my '01 Ultra had wear spots on the under lid (paint Rub offs), If you don't want to see it don't open the lid  is the answer I would expect.   I hope they offer you a fix but don't get your hopes up. I'm thinking of putting silicon on the spots to slow down the fray. Thanks for pointing this out I would not have noticed it this early.

pcr02hd,

Hopefully the rep will have an acceptable answer, but without a redesign I can't see the situation getting any better even if they do replace yours.  I don't know if this will work on not, but what about applying a few small pieces of the clear plastic film H-D uses on the side covers to prevent chafing from the seat?  Combined with a little silicone grease on the mating part, it just might help.

I just went out and looked at my '07.  It feels like the seam causing the problem is far enough away to not allow this to happen, but I'll keep an eye out for it now.

As for the repair: I own a GM (Chevy, Pontiac, Buick) and Chrysler (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep) dealership.  About once per week, for many years, we have had an upholstery/trim service that stops at the dealership to repair upholstery, primarily on trade-ins, but sometimes for warranty or customer satisfaction issues.  He is able to make small repairs, like yours, with such quality work that it is impssible to see where they were made.  The cost is generally less than $20.  Afterwards, you might consider applying a rubber molding over the area to prevent a reoccurrence. (Maybe similar to the old black door edge guards we used to see--just more oversized). Most RV supply places carry self-adhesive trim molding of varying sizes that can be cut to the exact size you need. Total repair should be less than $50.

A good dealer would probably even reimburse you through a "goodwill" adjustment rather than mess with the factory...

Just a thought...

Took a look at mine and there is the lump but no evidence of any rubbing.  There is no contact between the lumpy area and the front wall at all.  Perhaps the adjustment of the top would help.  Loosen the hinge and push it all the way forward.  I have a real good seal contact all the way around.

Maybe riding 2 up might make a difference as well.  Would push the top rearward allowing firm contact.  I don't do a lot of 2 up.

I am also looking for a thin piece of trim edging that could be applied over that top edge to protect it.  Would be invisible when the lid is closed.

Ultra,
I do a lot of 2up riding if I were to guess about 98% of the time.
The lid is loose and dances around it was tight when new but it loosened up I adjusted it and tightened it up again but it loosened up again it just doesn't want to stay tight.
It is a backrest for the backseater so I don't think that HD will want to go there.
It also is a $1500 piece.

WFP,
I think we met in York at the CVO plant tour in the spring if you are the one with the Deuce cause I have a Deuce also and I am the guy with many problems with the CUSE. Sorry to here you have this problem also.
I just got my striped parts changed, inner primary seal fixed, shifter shaft seal leak fixed, rider backrest replaced and shorted turn signals fixed. A couple of more items and it will be like a new bike.
Service Manager said I set a new shop record for number of events in one visit.
I am meeting with the HD Rep on Thursday about this and a couple of other problems.
