Why not just buy anothe engine?
« on: April 11, 2013, 10:43:07 AM »

While reading the post on making more power I was thinking why not just buy a SS 125 for 6 Gs and get it over with. You will pay way more adding power to the HD110 and the SS is still built with better parts for around.

Now that it's available for the newer bikes, if I ever want more power than I have now that's what I will do! Makes a lot of sense, and S&S makes solid, reliable engines.

Hmmm... I wonder what a used 110" granite engine goes for these days...

Yeah, when the warranty expires, first major issue will probably prod me to an S&S with Baker 7 speed.

I have a friend with a Tri Glide who is looking at a DD7 because his main tranny bearing is toast already. Accelerating in 6th apparently puts a lot of strain on the long tranny mainshaft with the belt pulley pulling one way, and the primary chain (and clutch basket) hanging off the end pulling the other way. Big torque engines will apparently fry the main tranny bearing pretty quickly when accelerating in 6th gear because of the gear ratio.

Why?? Just as soon go buy you a Victory or some other Harley wannabe.  While S&S makes great motors I'll stick to my Harley staying a Harley as much as possible.  Even if parts are made elsewhere, if it's stamped HD then it works for me. Do it too often and your Harley will start to look like a Gilroy Indian from a few years back with parts from all over the place.  Just my opinion.  But if you do drop an S&S in there, please don't ask me to race you.  ;D

Or you can just step up to one of these pretty little badges... It came with a solid extra 40hp and 15-20 extra ft.lbs. of torque...  :bananarock:

Just cause the price of the engine says $6k doesn't mean your done there.  If you want to do it right and avoid damage to other parts there are a lot of other items that need to be added or upgraded to support such an engine.  A buddy of mine removed his 103 on a road glide and installed a 120R in it and the list of parts needed was crazy.  I know you will go from a 110 to higher but there will still be other parts needed.  If you try and short cut it you can cause a lot of damage to a bike.  Going higher than 120R you are now considering going from belt to a chain cause of the torque.  My buddy got his 120R from a guy in Florida for $5k after all said and done installed out the door he was over $10k.

Just my 2 cents

I figure Jesse James didn't drop that motor in his last bike build for nothing.  :)

Why not just install a Procharger and keep the factory serial numbers etc?
Seems like it could be cheaper than a whole new motor too.

In my experience with forced induction, it's never as cheap as it seems at first! And I've got the fresh (serial numbers matching) 110 sitting in storage, if I ever decide to sell one day...  :coolblue:

What kind of money does the pro charger cost?
Is it a easy install?
What numbers would you be looking at?
What else is needed to complete the mod?
Thanks,

You may want to contact a site member named WTS he has a nice bike for sale and may provide the info you need. I have never owned a supercharged bike but have thought about it many times.

2013CVOBreakout, a while back I swapped a built 80" evo engine from my 95 Heritage for a S&S 107 with the IST ignition, and the 585 camshaft. If you get the IST ignition you get a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. The new engine was $5200. plus Tax and Shipping. It included the S&S Certificate of Authenticity. Cost me about $1400.00 to have it installed. I sold my 80 inch evo for $2650.00 first day the add came out. So my output was around $3950.00 not counting the tax and shipping. I did have some issues with the engine, but it was under warranty so no expense to me not even a deductible. Not bad considering I now have over 100 HP and 100lbs of torque according to S&S.
