Slightly off topic, but I've installed a manual starter pushbutton on every Harley I've ever owned.  Saved me a time or two along the way...

I thought I was the only one that still used those things....  ::)

Handy little part that you'll completely forget about. Until the moment you might need it. Cheap insurance to get you home someday.

Will sure beat taking the cover off in a gas station, at night, hot engine, using a leatherman.   :2vrolijk_21:

Ordered a repair kit, and picked up a new relay. The relays are a standard item, but the HD part has a suppression diode, so worth the little extra cost.

Since putting in a new relay I have had no issues, problem solved or coincidence.
Either way have no desire to take the starter apart until it is put away for the season.

The new chrome starter may mean  I may never take the starter apart  :nixweiss:

When I had the solenoid out to clean the contacts, I found a broken spring. About 3" long and it goes over the plunger in the solenoid.
The last 1/2" was broken. Any chance that can cause intermittent starter ops? My starter was not engaging, just a barely audible click at times.

Besides replacing the relay I also reversed the spring.

#22 for the spring, which appears to be the right part to go over #31.

That spring, PN 31600-09 apparently is no longer available.

Any sources?

That is 31600-90 Duane.  There weren't any 2009 parts in your 05 SEEG.

Thought I had some Duane.  Just walked out and checked the parts cabinet and I'm out though.  Just an empty bag where some used to be.  They come in 5 packs or 10 packs (don't remember which, it's been awhile) from the aftermarket.  Drag number for the bag was 13-9220.  Common Hitachi starter spring that was used for many many years.

Since that is what is on the piece of paper the parts guy gave me, I guess that is also why he said it was unavailable ...........

Should have checked my own book  :nixweiss:

For some reason that's a part number I just happened to remember.  No idea why.  But first clue was an 09 part with it's newer/different starter won't be right for our earlier bikes.  Mother Harley may very well have discontinued the old part too since the bitch often doesn't like us to be able to repair the things when we could just buy new starters instead.  But the aftermarket will have them.  You might have to buy a bulk pack.  But they'll be there.

So, I stopped at every dealer I passed, hoping for a spring. Looked on evilbay, found them for $15 plus shipping .................

The other day I went to my home dealer to pick up the parts I had ordered for the solenoid rebuild.
Complete package with everything you need except for ---------- the spring  :nixweiss:

So we look it up and low and behold they have it in stock. But he exclaims;

"it is an obsolete part"
"how many do you have?"
"three"
"I'll take them"

"what about the ball on the inside"

"we have three of those too"

"wrap 'em up"

I'll take that as an inexpensive score, $5.25 total

It was Candy. Still have to pull the starter and do the rebuild, but that is way better then being stuck having to get a new starter for want of a $1.50 spring  :2vrolijk_21:
