Look what followed me home! Can I keep it?
« on: June 10, 2013, 04:25:51 AM »

Am I nuckin' futs?

A few days ago, I went to a local dealership to ask about ordering a King Tour Pak and a Garmin 660 for my '12 FLHXSE3.  Installed, these two items would have cost ~$3400.  :o  The salesman then suggested that I should've bought an Ultra to begin with, and why don't I trade my '12 SG for a '13 Ultra?  I told him no chance.  I've put a lot of money into the SG, and it was just about where I wanted it, comfort and performance-wise.

Long story short, they gave me a much better offer than I expected, and I traded my Street Glide for a new Orange FLHTCUSE8.  And I couldn't be happier!

I can't believe the difference in the two models; bone stock, the '13 runs so much better than the '12.  I can't see how they came from the same company.  New, the '12 popped, backfired, stalled, burned oil, and sounded like loose marbles were living in the motor.  It was my first Harley, and the dealers said it was normal for the 110s, so I lived with it.  Riding the '13 home, the motor sounded like a harmonious collection of mechanical noises.  The howling from the primary was absent, there is no piston slap at all, and it hasn't backfired, sputtered, or stalled once.

The suspension is more cushy and comfortable than the SG.  The higher CoG with the Tour Pak and increased ride height will take a little adjustment, but that's no big deal.  I put 50 miles on the odometer going home, and changed the motor oil.  I know, it's probably overkill, but humor me.  On my '12 SG, the oil would be sooty black after the first 10 mile ride.  The oil in the '13 looks like new after 200 miles.  I know because I am obsessed with checking the oil levels after each ride, since I had to do it with the '12 SG.

Everything is not perfect.  I forgot how hot these bikes run stock, how quiet the exhaust is, and how clunky the transmission can be.  Can't wait to put in some Shock Proof tranny oil and get some decent pipes and a tune done.  Also, the hammock seat isn't as comfy as I expected, and I'll need to put on some taller handle bars.

All in all, I am really pleased with my new CVO.

One more pic.

One other thing.  I'm not saying that the '13s are better than the '12s.  I'm pointing out how much variation in quality there seems to be between bikes from HD.  Totally different personalities in each bike, even though they have the exact same drivetrain, frame, and fairing.

Very nice scooter...  I should have my bike by the end of the week.  Then it is off to the races to get it to the first service by next Monday.

Now here's a story with a happy ending.  ::). I'm happy this worked out for you!  There is the "right" Harley for every rider.

Lilcoot, I did that on a truck once...went in to have the clutch adjusted and came out with a new truck.... :2vrolijk_21:

Glad you got what you "weren't expecting" out of your SESG as you got a really nice bike and one of the great color combo's for 2013 (don't tell Ken I said the Orange was a great combo.... ;) )

I miss my tour pac, too.  Funny how you think it's bulky and in the way and then when it's not there, you miss it.  Don't get me wrong, I love my SG but on trips and such, sure do miss the long distance stuff the Ultra's have.  I'm just too cheap to buy a king TP so bought the adjustable rack and a big bag to pack....works for me I guess.

Saw one of the orange babies at K'ville HD on Saturday and that Orange really pops in the sunshine (what little we has over the weekend).  Enjoy and ride on brother.... ;D

Sounds like you drew the long straw this time congrats. Unfortunetely nowadays quality is either long straw or short straw. Hope it stays that way for you.

Nice bike.  I like my ultra over the sg as well.  It's all in what feels good to each person.  Because I like the stock bars just perfect for me.  But taller made my arms tired.   It just depends on how a person is built and what's comfortable to them.  I sure cant ride a bike with the bars up over my head like I see people do going down the road.

Good looking bike also

Coot; First, congrats on your new ride. Second, I just got a 2013 se ultra about three weeks ago and I too also think and feel the quality is sooo much better then previous years. I had an 09 and there is NO comparison between the two bikes. Ride safe and enjoy your new family member as I know you will.
