Some trouble on the road
« on: July 03, 2013, 08:52:28 PM »

Heading home from the GTG in Santa Fe the long way - doing some sightseeing and left eastern Colorado this morning headed to Omaha.  Filled up with gas last night just before I got to the hotel as I was on reserve.  This morning after a few miles, maybe 10 or so, the engine started sort of misfiring - just a light 'bucking' then it settled down and ran fine.  Did this several times during the first couple hours riding but always cleared up.  I suspected maybe bad fuel - no it was not diesel!  So I ran that tank down to about 40 miles on the range and filled up again.  Still did it several times so next time I filled up I put in some Heet thinking maybe I had water in the fuel and also some Sta Bil just for chits and grins.

Continued to do it off an on and I determined to run the tank really low.  So low that the range reading said 'Lo' and as I exited I-80 for my hotel the engine quit.  Figured I ran out of gas so I got my spare gallon in my Reda gas can and put it in.  Engine started but ran really rough and died a couple of times.  Just before my hotel I did completely fill the tank and drove on to the hotel a mile or so without incident but engine just did not sound 'right.'

I've thrown no DTCs at all and I would think if ignition or sensor I would get a DTC.   A little concerned being on the road tomorrow with it being a holiday and dealers most likely closed.

All I have to say is that this beast better not leave me stranded! :'(

Any ideas on what might be going on?

Jerry you could be loosening fuel pressure from the Fuel regulator (the one way valve in the tank).  I think you have ruled out bad gas. Pull the plugs and if it's firing good then the Fuel pressure would be my guess.

How many miles do you have on the Fuel filter?

Bike has only 23,000 miles total.  I thought about fuel delivery also.  Thanks for the insight.  I know some have had pin holes in fuel lines inside tank but don't think that is the problem because does it with full tank.  I thought those regulator problems were all sorted out several years ago, lol.   :confused5:

I think the fuel filter is supposed to be replaced at 25k maybe yours went bad a little sooner?

Called all the dealers around the Omaha area and of course all are closed for the holiday.  Surprise, surprise.    :o

So after we visited the Strategic Air & Space Museum we headed for Kansas City bucking and snorting and running rough at various times all along the way.  But we made it!  ;D

There are several dealers in the KC area but the only one I have ever visited or read much about on this site is Gail's H-D so we are camped out at the Comfort Inn about 3 miles away.  So I plan to be there when they open at 9 am tomorrow.  Hope I chose the right dealer to take it to.   :nixweiss:

When you get to Gail's ask for Robin. He's a top notch mechanic and will take care of you.  :2vrolijk_21:

Did you try re seating the fuel line quick disconnect coming out of the tank? There have been some issues with it that can often be fixed by disconnecting and reconnecting and/or rotating the connector a bit.

Did not try fuel line disconnect or the battery cables but will mention that to them.  Think battery is OK since no issues cranking and voltage is where it should be.  We'll have to see what they find.  Thanks for the suggestion and referral to Robin.

You chose wisely grasshopper.  Robin is the best tune guy around and the service department as a whole is very highly rated.

At Gail's HD and on Robin's lift at 9 am. Took about half hour and he located source of my fuel problem. Not up top but down below. Started making a knocking noise yesterday and it is lifter came apart causing less than perfect air fuel of course. Metal particles through motor. Hopefully moco will replace vs repair since we don't know if crank damaged. I am in good hands here and everyone has been awesome.
