"Harley-Davidson issues voluntary recalls of certain 2014 Motorcycles"

"MILWAUKEE (October 16, 2013) - Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG) is acting quickly to address  potential safety issues by voluntarily recalling certain 2014 Touring motorcycles equipped with a hydraulic clutch system that may pose a safety issue for riders and/or passengers. The recalls include a Do Not Ride notice to owners and a Do Not Deliver notice to Harley-Davidson dealers until the motorcycle is fixed.
“The safety of our customers is our highest priority,” said Tony Wilcox, Harley-Davidson General Manager of Motorcycle New Product Delivery. “We have identified potential safety issues and are moving quickly to notify our customers and dealers. The inspection and repair of these motorcycles is extremely important, so it’s critical that our customers with affected vehicles contact their dealers immediately. We apologize for this circumstance. The company is committed to correcting this issue and providing customers with the quality experience and service they expect.”

The recalls affect 25,185 Touring motorcycles, models FLHTCU, FLHTK, FLHTP, FLHX, FLHXS, FLHTKSE and FLHRSE, and 3,861 Softail® CVOs and Trikes, models FLHTCUTG, FXSBSE and FLSTNSE, built between May 3, 2013, and Oct. 14, 2013.

Some of these motorcycles may exhibit a condition in which the hydraulic clutch system may lose the ability to generate enough lift to disengage the clutch.  If the clutch does not disengage as intended, the rider may have difficulty slowing or stopping the motorcycle, which could result in an accident. Harley-Davidson has initiated these recalls to correct the affected motorcycles.

The company is taking the additional measure of issuing a Do Not Ride notice to riders given the potential safety issues. The company wants owners of affected motorcycles to contact an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer immediately to arrange for an inspection. The dealer will pick up, inspect and make the necessary repairs at no cost to the owner. The repairs have been identified and should take less than one hour.

Although the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is closed as a result of the partial government shutdown, Harley-Davidson is proceeding with these voluntary recalls consistent with NHTSA’s process."

Does that sound like a clutch plate issue to anyone? It sure doesn't to me. It sounds like air getting into the lines...

I agree. Could be air, could be seals that lets the oil back on the wrong side of the actuator.

Hydraulic clutch problems----------Recall

Just catching up on forum issues after a week of vacation.  On other forums am seeing info on a massive recall from HD which includes mostly 2013 models but also some 2014s as well with the hydraulic clutch. Didn't notice any post here about it. :-\

Several threads have been started on the subject, and the mods have been busy moving and merging them.  The bikes involved are 2014 models, not 2013's.  The build dates go all the way back to May of 2013, but that's because they've been building the 2014's since that time.

Dealerships are waiting for parts to fix the problem.  I called mine and they said call back sometime this week to set a pick up time.  You would think they would supply the parts before the recall, or at least coordinate the whole recall situation with the supplier.

I think the Motor Company wanted to alert the effected owners not to ride their bikes as soon as they were aware of the issue. Number one priority is keeping customers safe, even if it means inconvenience. My dealer picked up my bike last Friday and does not expect to receive the recall kits until Tuesday at the earliest.

Actually Ray it's usually the same sort of thing in the auto industry when you're talking about a safety related recall.  They have to announce the recall ASAP due to the safety issue, and that usually means parts aren't available if the problem requires a redesigned part or if the parts in inventory are also defective.  So in this particular case they seem to be doing it the right way.  I would love to know if they are still running production however.  It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find that they've got new parts on the assembly line and are still building bikes, while customers wait for parts to fix their recalled bikes.  Unfortunately that is also how much of the auto industry does it as well.

Wow, this looks like a fair amount of work, hope my clutch is OK, hate to have the bike tied-up longer while they wait for new clutch parts.

The hydraulic clutch on my 2011 FLTRUSE failed after 15,000 miles and two months out of warranty. H-D UK didn't want to know and I had to pay for replacement master cylinder which took a month to deliver. I wonder if I'm at risk given that the new part was fitted earlier this year. They are making a huge fuss, as ever, about the inherent risks. I ended up with no clutch in heavy traffic in central London. No death and no injury.
