My engine is apart and my heads are off.....And the labor is covered under warranty.  I seriously considered headwork....Called TR and everything.  I'm not doing it, and here's why...

- I'm not building a hotrod and don't care what numbers the bike produces.  I want rideable.  I want cooler than stock.  I want reliable.  I don't care about dyno sheet bragging rights.

- Headwork with my cam choice (which, as I mentioned, isn't about max power) will add somewhere around 10 horsepower and a bit of torque.  That's a lot of money for not a lot of return because.....

- I have no intention of increasing compression past adding a .030 head gasket.  This is a touring bike and I have no intention of making it less capable as such.  I've been stuck in the middle of nowhere in 110 degree heat and lousy gas.  I will be again, and I don't want to be panicking about my high-compression motor.

- T-Man is 2 months on headwork right now.

- $1,000 for heads (with minimal gain) buys a lot of gas and motel rooms for trips.  It also more than covers a Corbin Dual Tour, which will make a far more noticeable improvement to the bike.

For a hotrod bike, heads are a must - especially with a big cam.  For what I'm trying to do (which sounds very similar to what you're trying to do), I don't see the need.

Excellent thoughts, and appreciate the response.

Curious, what cam are you going with?

You're quite welcome.

I'm going with the Andrews 57.  I trust my builder implicitly, and he's gotten good results from them.

have the compression set at 10.0-1(93cc)& a set of S&S .570ez cams.makes for a VERY reliable mild build, :bananarock:

That little combo runs very well, and cools the engine waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down vs a 255.
Nothing wild about it, just a real good runner with a big broad curve. :2vrolijk_21:

Finally got a chance to disassemble the motor.  Went in through the top end, removing rocker boxes, rockers, pushrods, etc.

My engine has 30,780 miles on it, and this is a 2010.

Much to my surprise, my lifters and cams look excellent.  Having read so many threads here and on HDF, I was expecting to see the lifter wheels and camshaft pitted/scored, or at least the hard finish wearing off. Even the inner camshaft bearings look good.

See the pictures below.  I can't see assembling the engine with these same components.  I'm feeling fortunate that my parts are in such good condition, but I believe using better quality parts are the ticket.

Most likely it'll be:

S&S premium lifters w/o limiters
Andrews 57H camshafts
Torrington/Koyo Inner Camshaft bearings
SE Camshaft Support Plate w/ Hi flow oil pump

Anyway...we'll see what happens.

Here's the pictures.
