Day Eight | Halifax, Nova Scotia – Charlos Cove, Nova Scotia | 200 miles

Today’s route would be on Marine Drive which is a designated scenic route along the Eastern Shore.  It closely follows the coast of the Atlantic and the Strait of Canso on Routes 207,211, 316,322, 344 and Highway 111.  This would be the poorest road conditions to-date with some very deep ruts in the road.  Even a dual purpose bike would have been challenged at times.

Port Dufferin is a rural community on the Eastern Shore, it would be here that I would meet a very interesting person while visiting this church.  This Presbyterian Church opened in 1904.  A two-room school was opened in the 1940’s.

Port Dufferin is situated at the mouth of Salmon River, where it empties into Beaver Harbour.  This is a view from the Church.

At the time of our arrival, it was beginning to rain and the fog was rolling into the area.

Charlos Cove is a small Acadian community near Guysborough and our lodging was in the middle of nowhere which I like.

There was a path that would take you down to the water.

After a nice meal at our evening stay, I enjoyed a desert!  YUM!

Enjoyed an interesting conversation with several German tourists.  They were taking four weeks to visit Canada and their first trip outside Germany.  Nice folks and spoke better English than some of the folks I know living here.

Day Nine | Charlos Cove, Nova Scotia – Syndey, Nova Scotia | 200 miles

Continuing on Marine Drive, the road conditions continued to be poor but the scenery was worth the challenge on these roads.

Guysborough, Nova Scotia.  You guessed it, a lighthouse off in the distance.

Once off the Marine Drive, I would be taking Highway 4 along the coast of Bras d’Or Lake.  The route was not much to brag about and I needed to make up some time I only stopped for gas for the most part.  Road conditions were, you guessed it, poor but it was better than the “big road” for fun.

I was rushing as I wanted to make the Fortress of Louisbourg and I made the last bus going over there.  Only had perhaps an hour and certainly need much more but…

Life within an 18th century fortified French town comes to life at reconstructed Louisbourg, a major trade and military hub twice besieged by the British.
