AJ's Trip to Chief's & Traxxion
« on: August 15, 2008, 12:13:00 AM »

Well, Linda & I made it up to Chuck & Mahota's. No problems and the bike is running great. Chuck commented when I was putting it in the garage that it was weird seeing a SEUC that wasn't leaking. I'm off to Traxxion's at 8:15. I'm hoping this upgrade is all that everyone has made it out to be! I'm sure it is. Pictures to follow tomorrow.

I can't help but laughing every time I get ready to go to sleep here at Chuck's. All I keep thinking about is the story of how "Piglet" (Mohota's cat) came pouncing on Don's chest in the middle of the night. Needless to say the door is closed tonight.  ;D

Well, I got a late start this morning but made it. Our hosts have been wonderful as usual. We are waiting at Traxxion now. Linda is talking about pulling a Binx move and getting a little pampering done.
The folks here could not be nicer. We are just waiting for them to pull the forks now and then the process begins.

Pulling up this morning:

AJ, you're gonna like it man.  Tell the guys I said 'hi' also.  Great folks and great product.  Chit I'm overdue for my first service - got over 30k since I did my Traxxion upgrade.  So when I'm in for the 0905 campaign on 9-3-08 I'm having my forks pulled and fluid & bushings/seals changed.

Like learning to ride a new bike, huh AJ?  Good to see Dan and the crew again.  You'll never look back...when are you going to learn to listen to your elders?

Tried to call today to see how you were making out.  Glad to read it went well.  I remember that reaction pulling away on mine.

My cell phone died towards the end of the afternoon. I had been on it most of the day being that we were at Traxxion all day! The day didn't quite go as planned... The left fork somehow 'rusted' and was a bear to remove. About two hours into the job I hear the loud banging and go investigate. Back in the shop is a guy up on the lift with a hammer wailing on the fork to get it free. Once both were out it was time for lunch. So another hour later it was time to resume. Both forks went back in fine then came time to put it all back together. Let's just say that we didn't leave there until 7 o'clock. 9 1/2 hours and a few shiny pennies later, I'm one happy camper.

Terry, you're right. I had ridden a few people's bikes that had this done and never realized the difference. I guess getting on someone else's bike there are so many things that are different from your own that you don't realize all of it. As I was pulling away I noticed what a totally different ride I had. Everything from riding position to the 'feel' of bumps felt different. Yes, it was like learning to ride a new bike! Rog, this will probably be the first upgrade I do to my next new bike. What an incredible upgrade.

And Howie, I ain't an anchor no more!

Yep, it is an amazing change.  That's why the Nanner went to Traxxion before I ever sat my a$$ on it.  Glad to hear it was a good riding experience.  Based on your and other (twolane, s/b etc experiences at the install) I think one should plan a full day and not expect to be back on the road untill dinner time.

  Your day went like mine there.  The red bike was their first Harley.  They had a little bit of figuring out to do.  They got started on it first thing in their morning.  I think I rolled away about 7:30 that night.  It was at least close to it.  Chuck had to head on to meet a group for dinner.  I caught up later.  Just amazed the whole way at the difference in the front end.

Thanks for confirming that, AJ.  Each of these bikes are sooooooo different even though they're the same, and we're so in tune with the way our own bike feels that it's tough to really pick up on the difference in the suspension along with everything else.  I've ridden 2 Traxxion equipped bikes and while there was a difference, maybe not a $1,000+ difference, but I always did think that I might come away feeling totally different if I felt it on my own bike.

I don't want to :beatdeadhorse:, but I feel the money was worth it. Don, are you sure your's was the first Harley they did because it felt like mine was!  ;D Brian, if I had just felt it on someone else's bike I would not really have known what I was feeling. Once it was on my own I could feel the dramatic difference. I don't like wasting my money any more than the next guy but if I was to keep a bike for any length of time, this upgrade would be a 'must do'.

Now for the rest of the story... I never did get to ride the bike today save the 50' to Chief's basement. She sat there all day while we installed the HID lights & saddlebag lights, fixed the XM antenna, replaced Hot Toppers, replaced the derby cover screws, and did a general clean up. She's asleep down stairs now.

Because of the BT module being mounted on top of the radio (I do NOT recommend this) we had to find an alternative spot for the HID ballasts. This first picture is for Gary. Chuck titled it "Don't be afraid of the Dremel"

We had to notch out a little room for the ballast to be mounted onto the fairing (the last place I had room).

AJ; got oil pressure again?

I only rode it across the front lawn to the basement. I never looked. Derby cover came off and oil did NOT come gushing out as expected. We added just shy of a quart to the crank case and a dollop to the inner. Chuck pulled both plugs and they were whitish in color. He's thinking I'm just burning some oil because the rings may have not seated properly after the last gasket install. One way or another I'll find out on the ride home this afternoon. Bad part about it is there are no HD shops open on Sunday along my route.

Youch, that's a bit of an extra pucker factor built in to the ride home.  Just a quart low shouldn't kill oil pressure like you described either.  Be careful man.  Safe trip and I'll have good thoughts flying southeast.

I want to thank two wonderful people that I have the pleasure to call friends!

We made it home a hour ago after a 5 1/2 hour trip. Chuck gave me an energy drink to keep me awake. Home doing laundry.
Linda & I had a great weekend with Chuck & Mahota. The girls went shopping Saturday while Chuck & I worked on my bike. As Chuck said I was up @ 7:30 (that's a.m.) trying to get it all buttoned up. This afternoon we went to the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta to see the little fishies. Another great day!

Thanks again Chuck, I couldn't have done any of it without you!

Glad to see you got in ok AJ.  Thought about the bike more than once today hoping the changes were great and nothing was giving any trouble.  Get some sleep and tell bike upgrade stories tomorrow.  Can't wait to read how you like the goodies on the road and in the dark.

Well now it's time for the bike upgrade stories... Chuck just called to get the low down on how the trip home went and what I thought. Here it is:

As I have stated about the Traxxion Dynamics, wow! The bike has a totally different ride, for the better. Weighted down with all of our gear, the bike handled flawlessly. Chuck had noticed that the Bitubo's were set incorrectly and adjusted them. I am able to corner with a more controlled feel at a higher speed. Best part is nothing fell off on the way home.

From another thread:
That being said, is this the part I need for my bike?
"Here's a dual H9 kit for your new reflector housing for $120.00.
http://www.xenonlink.com/product_info.php?cPath=115_118&products_id=165"
The H9 8000K?

The HID lights are great. If you do any nighttime riding, which we all will do at some point, these are sure to put a smile on your face. So far I am happy with the installation of Xenonlink's product. I was traveling down the highway from Augusta to Beaufort on a non lighted road when a deer crossed in front of me a mile ahead. Had I not had the HID's, I never would have known it was there. There was no danger of me hitting the deer but I was alerted to their presence. As for the install, on the dual bulb configuration of the SEUC, you will need 1 H9 bulb and 1 H8 (for the low beam) bulb. Chuck had to file the housing to make the second H9 fit. It wasn't a problem (at least for me  ;D) but in order to get the right ones, get one of each size. The light pattern was incredible. There was light everywhere. As Portal said in another post, the road signs almost reflect too much light. I also would not go with the 8K again. It is just a little too much blue. I would go with the 6000. This is just a personal opinion. Others may like the blue. When the light, whether Hi or Low, hit a white object like a license plate, it appeared to have blueish color. It made it difficult to recognize familiar signs as thet were now a different color. I made the comment that it reminded me of playing a video game in the dark. This is another upgrade that I would do again.

The final major upgrade of the weekend was the saddlebag spoiler LED's. I already have the Custom Dynamic's 14.7" red LED strip across the TP. More light is better in the back. Chuck wired the SB LED's to be run/stop/ and turn. The run/stop power is picked up from the accessory plug under the seat. However, he cut the ends off my old Auxiliary Running Light / Brake Light / Turn Signal Conversion Kit p/n 69465-06 and spliced in the wires from the new LED's. This brought all the power to the lights except for the functionality of the turn signals. I have on order a Kuryakyn run/brake/turn module p/n 4859 that will go in series to make it all work. This is another "for show" installation that I also would do again.

Well there you have it. Three great upgrades and a wonderful weekend with friends. Who could ask for more.
AJ

My Bitubos (12" for the SEEG) should be here any day.  What's a good place to start for the settings?  Is there a thread where the adjustment procedures are described?  Thx!

Mine are set to 6 clicks. It's as tight as you can go without forcing it. Once you have them on, you'll understand. Another point of reference for me is that the allen set screw is 90 degrees from dead center back. As an important note: reservoir should be up and forward. The knob will be down and away from the rear of the saddlebag. In this position Traxxion claims it does not hit the saddlebag. Brian, I'm thinking our frames and bags should be the same. Hope this helps. You've got my # if you need it.

edited: this picture shows the wrong way to mount according to Traxxions. Put the reservoir towards the front. I haven't checked then since the ride home to see if they hit but will try to tomorrow.

AJ, I'm pretty sure they hit the bags in any other position up or down.

this is the second time i have heard H-8/H-9 for the bulbs. the dual bulb housing i added to my SERK had H-9/H-11 bulbs. makes me wonder if HD changed the configuration at some point. i would suggest verifying what you actually have before ordering

Brian - with bags - they only fit one way - and they still may rub a bit. If you are concerned you may need to space out the upper zeus bracket a bit.

It is hard to see if they are hitting. And they may not when you are looking at it. But once you hit the road - they might. I have small scuff marks on my bags, no paint damage though

Actually, you're at 9 clicks from full soft. That puts the set screw at 9:00. Full soft is 12:00. I run solo at 7, 9 2-up and loaded.

As far as the resevoirs go, as long as they're on the bottom, rubbing is probable. If they are moved to the top, they don't move with the swingarm and even if they did hit the bags, there isn't any motion to do damage as happens with them on the bottom.

I'm corn-fused! :huepfenlol2:  Reservoir should be on the top or bottom, front or back? :nixweiss: ;D  Chuck, which way you got yours?  Also, isn't there more than one adjustment?

Box is here, guess I'll open 'em up and take a look.

Chief,

Here are mine. Can you tell anything about the settings in these pics? Are they good? I'm 180-185 lbs and mama is around 115 (sorry baby) :P.

:indian_chief:

And why don't we have them on top where it is much easier to adjust???? :o

Rob, are you getting any rubbing on the bags in as you have them mounted? :nixweiss:

Functionally, it doesn't matter. It works either way. I have mine on the bottom, rear. AJ had his mounted that way and got some pretty nasty rubbing. One thing that would possibly help would be to move the SB brackets out a smidge with 1/8" spacer. More clearance may help.

If they are mounted with the resevoir on the bottom, it will move with the swingarm. If it contacts the bags, since it is moving up and down, it could damage the bags. If it is mounted up top, it may hit the bags, but it isn't moving up and down and any damage would be significantly less. Plus, spacing the bags out at the top would benefit the top mounted resevoir most.

That's where mine were at first, but I flipped them to get the chrome knuckle up top. I do get some rubbing, but not much.

Looks like 6 clicks to me. That would probably be fine solo. I ride solo on 7 and 9 for trips. Nothing much really changes until you get up to 6 and beyond.

Preload looks pretty good for just you. If you add the wife, I'd add in some more just to make sure you've got enough travel for bumps.

Bike looks clean. Are you riding much?

Haven't been much lately.

On the clicks and the pre-load, is the pre-load the big chrome nut at the spring and the clicks are on the resevoir? If I want to go to 7-9 clicks would I click the resevoir toward the "H" or the "S"? I'm guessing "H". To add more pre-load, righty tighty?

The way the bags are shaped on the backside, it seems like mounting them the way Robmay has them would be best for avoiding rubbing.  Guess I'll give that a try and see what happens.  These things came with zero preload in 'em, so looks like I'll be following the measuring process outlined in the manual. :-\

You are correct on both points. :2vrolijk_21: Once you go past 6, you'll begin to feel the resistance increase. Once past 6, it comes up quickly.

Mounted like that, the resevoir sits close to the edge of the shock recess, hitting right on the corner, running up and down for an inch or two.

I just check both of my bags and I have rubbing on the right bag only. It starts about 4 inches from the top edge of the bag and the rub is about 2 inches long. It's through all layers of the paint and into the plastic of the bag some.

If you run with a stabilizer, I would assume there would be less chance of rubbing as there would be less lateral movement of the rear wheel.

Hmmmmm. maybe it's time to get one of the Bagger Braces. :nixweiss:

There's probably enough variability in the tolerance stackup on these bikes that will result in one bike (or one side of one bike) rubbing and another not.  I may have to "clay" my shocks/bags to see where I'm at and then shim accordingly, if necessary.  Thanks for all the tips/comments Chuck and Rob!

I haven't had a chance to look at mine since they were changed to the 'front' position. As Chief said though, in the back they rubbed into the plastic of the bag well past paint & primer.

Brian - in any other position other then the way RobMay has his in the picture I could not install my bags.

That is one of the reasons I tried the Arnott system, because I had to take the bags off to adjust the pre-load. If the pre-load was on top I could just loosen the bag and make the adjustment.

Different swingarm, differnt mounting (You had to use the spacers).  A lot of stuff is different.

I would actually call that 10, just like 10:00. At six, the set screw points right at the shock mount. At 12 it points away from the shock. 3 and 6 are 90 degrees from those. I've never tried 10. I bet it's pretty stiff.

I do like the 07 SERKS...did they ever make an O&B SERK?

I got the Run-Turn-Brake (Kuryakyn p/n 4859) adapter from Jenni today. I will install it over the weekend and post pictures.

Thanks again for all the pointers in this thread.  I mounted mine with the reservoirs up and toward the front of the bike.  No problems at all with clearance on the right bag, but it was pretty close on the left one.  If i pushed on the inside of the bag, I could get it to hit the reservoir.  So, I tweaked the forward saddlebag bracket a bit, which helped and then put the fuzzy side of a piece of velcro on the bag just in case.  Should be good to go!  Packed my spanner wrench and looking forward to seeing how the bike behaves vs. the Progressive 440s that were on there before on the trip to/at/from MV next week.
