If Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, dealerships conducted themselves this way, it would all over the 6 o'clock news.
What makes the song and dance routine acceptable for them?
On the same note of pompus attitude, we've purchased our OEM parts from a local dealer now for a long time.
So much they even deliver to us.
Never had much of any issues.
They recently hired a group of "children" and then the problems started.
Has come down to what I call the mystry parts when the parts runner brings them up to the front counter.
Never know what is it going to be.
When I addressed this serious ongoing issue, the "childrens" next higher up was blaming us for their inability to perform their job correctly.
I reassured them that I am the same person that had been ordering all along, and that the issue was no farther than the new employees.
Seems that HD is never wrong, even when they are wrong.
Is that a Yogi-ism?

HD has gotten to big for their britches but the consumers seem to be very tolerant of the screw you attitude. I tried tell a friend that there were other nice machines out there that might actually outperform the Harleys and his response was, "but it's not a Harley".  Looks like just having the name Harley Davidson on it excuses it from honest evaluation.

At some point you will have to be frank with the dealer and tell him that if he can not discern that there is a problem he can never be trusted to diagnose or fix any machine. One other approach is to ride machine as hard and abusive as you can and force the issue of total failure. Of course as mentioned by another poster just keep the fluids in to absolved yourself. If it does not fail consider trading it soon and mention to the dealer that is is a perfectly normal Harley and therefore should get full KBB value. Encourage him to let customers try the bike out to improve the possibility of a quick and lucrative sale. :D

Heading to Harley again tomorrow so that I can pay to have my new bike torn apart and inspected.
The funny part is the Harley service rep from Harley Canada told the dealer what he would like them to check?
As long as I'm paying for it he has no problem checking everything that should have been checked under warranty. :confused5:

Not really that funny, is it...  If there is one single thing the Harley service rep thinks should be checked when your bike is apart to diagnose the vibration problem, I would not pay one single cent towards the cost of taking the bike apart, or performing the inspection.  That is about the most disappointing, disgusting and ridiculous thing I've heard come from Harley service, and that's saying something, given the volume of disappointing, disgusting and ridiculous things that come from Harley service.    >:(

Can you imagine buying a BMW M5 and having a terrible vibration at 3,000 RPM's and the dealer telling you it's normal? There has to be something we can do to curb this kind of arrogance.

I too have been following this thread. Can you contact the Rep and have them meet you at the dealership? I would insist they ride the bike before you pay anything out of your pocket. If... they find something wrong will they refund or not charge you?

The rep said if they did find something out of spec they would most likely cover it .
But if the crank run out was extreme say .010 which would likely cause the engine vibrate but not at there replacement spec of .012 they wouldn't pay. The specs are crazy high in the first place.

With all of the bikes we tune every year.. will be over 200 if we stay on track.. its is not that uncommon to tune a bike that is a well out side the normal range.. Most though have the issue at idle. No matter what you do its a bouncer.. Fuel timing nothing will settle it down.. Just a crank combo that is more than likely well outside the range..

We had a customer that was dealing with the same thing as you are.. HD never did anything in fact when they checked the crank and it was under the spec they charged him for that labor..   He got tired of dealing with it had us install a S&S crank..  SMOOTH as glass now. I know he is working to get money back.

What would happen if you took it out and rode it and downshifted to first gear at say 70mph?

Update:
Just got home from the dealer! They wanted me to pay 7 to 8 hours labour, plus parts, to inspect the camshaft side of the crankshaft for run-out. After hearing from a few guys on the site I asked them to take apart the primary side and check it for run-out and check the transmission input shaft for run out at the same time. I figured if the crank was out a bit on the left side it would definitely be out on the cam side and I would only cost me a few hundred bucks ($350.00 to be exact with gaskets and oil) instead of $1000 or more for the cam side.

Well surprise , surprise, the crank was out .008 and the compensator was worn badly on one side.

They contacted Harley and after waiting 2hrs I had them put it back together and headed home. After paying my $350.00 of course.

Waiting to see what Harley says! I'm sure that they will also want me to pay for the other side even though this inspection proved without a doubt the crank shaft run out is causing the vibration.

Doing that a time or two would most likely scissor the crank, could be scary too
