Lexi 117 ci Episode 6 of the Bike from Hell (Not a new 117 kit)
« on: February 27, 2016, 09:12:09 AM »

Hi my name is Black Diamond and I’m an addict……  Sorry for the long post.

For those of you just joining the Lexi show here’s a review of past episodes…new issue starts at the bold 6th build in a later posting if you want to skip ahead.

Stock 110 motor.  +3700 miles the rear cylinder liner moved.   At that point my genius gene kicked in. Decided to make her a 117 since most of the labor was on HD’s dime.

1st build.
Cyclerama 595 cams & heads.  Axtell cylinders & reverse dome pistons.  103hp /116 tq.  11000 miles Multiple issues with oil blow and low on power. Decided to chase dyno numbers.

2nd build.
T-Man 590 cams & stage 3 heads.  These are not the T-Man 110 heads. 115 hp / 122 tq.  21000 miles.  Some blow by but less.  Power better but still not what was expected.  Took her in for the oil issues.  The tensioners were rebuilt incorrectly.  Pads had pieces break off contaminating the motor, complete tear down necessary.

3rd build.
New Axtell cylinders & 20* Stroker pistons, TR 590 cams.  109 hp / 130 tq.  6000 miles.  Power was immediate, like being launched off an aircraft carrier.  Circlip securing cam to the support plate snapped.  Pieces become lodged in oil pump shelling gears, gouge cylinders and piston skirts.  Darkhorse crank badly damaged – had to be replaced.

4th build.
Rev Perf cylinders, Axtell 20* Stroker pistons, WFO Larry 110 heads cut to match pistons.  Mackie 598 cams.  123 hp / 134 tq.  7000 miles.  Burning oil.  Heads removed and more debris located.  Cleaned up running good.  Wood Directional Lifter needle bearing failure, debris took out oil pump and cams.

5th build.
Rev Per cylinders, Axtell 20* Stroker, T-Man 625 cams.  09 later Oil Pan, V&H Power Dual Exhaust, Crusher mufflers.  114 hp / 122 tq.  +6000 miles.  No issues with this build.  But my SESG 113” build makes 127 hp / 130 tq.  It drove me nuts my 117 was at least matching her.  Should have left well enough alone.  On all the above builds the ccp was a bit low, in the 185 lbs area.  We were always going for 195 – 200 lbs.

Cont. for new problems

6th build. Rev Perf cylinders, Axtell 20* Stroker pistons, WFO Larry 110 heads cut to match pistons, T-Man 662-2 cams This is the build I rode to the WV & MV GTG.  The heads, cylinders and pistons set up by Randy @ Hyperformance with instructions to get the compression up to 10.8 -1.  Randy sent everything back saying most he was comfortable doing was 10.4.

My builder got her back together but was having severe personal mental issues.  This issue has been addressed between us, I’m not willing to go farther into it.  At first everything seemed great.  Got it tuned with no issue.  131 hp / 131 tq.  CCP 195.  Man I was living high on the hog.  On the way to WV GTG, I heard an odd, intermittent noise.  I was unable to track it down but it sounded like it was coming from the cam chest.  A few at the GTG heard the noise too but uncertain what it was.

After the WV GTG I parked Lexi and took Vanessa or Ruby on several other rides.  It was now Lexi turn for the MV run.  I had my new builder listen for the noise.  He heard it a couple of times but no idea what it was without looking inside noise.  I asked him to change the lifters.  He did but said I was probably wasting my time.  But hell I read all about it on the internet.

I heard the noise a number of times on the rides in MV.  Unbalanced said she was burning oil which she had just started to do, about a qt. every 1000 miles or so.  Upon returning home I dropped her off to my wrench.  Here’s a list of the issues he found.
•   Secondary cam chain tensioner reassembled incorrectly allowing the chain to whip striking the oil pump, scoring the case
•   Left side cam support plate alignment pin missing
•   Some of the bolt used to install the cam support plate were ¼” too long.  They bottomed out with no clamping force on the plate
•   Cam Support Plate had enough play cause damage to the plate
•   Valve seal was stuck to the valve
•   Rear exhaust valve seat was loose
•   Oil was not able to circulate to the piston oiler allowing cylinders to be damaged
•   Several of the threaded holes had to have heli-coils installed.

Hearing that chain striking the oil pump probably saved the rest of the motor.  So now….

6A build.  Axtell cylinder repaired and ball honed, + .030 20* Stroker pistons re-ringed, new cam support plate, T-Man 662-2 cams.  CCP 200 / 195.  132 hp / 134 tq.  I’ve only got a couple of hundred miles so far this winter.  The motor sounds happy, quiet.  Time will tell.  I should have drove her off US 60 were the road slid down the mountain during the WV GTG.

My Stupid has no limits.

Jeff, you seem to be living the dream - chasing HP = $$$

So if I follow along correctly, builder of number 6 did a whole bunch of screw ups?
Same builder as prior runs?
Same builder that took it down and found the issues?

Duane, New builder for the latest build.  The guy that did my 95 build in the 02 SERK & the 113 build in the SESG did the build with all the issues.  The other motors are holding up very well.  +10000 miles on them.  He fell apart during the 117 build.  I had no idea how bad things had gotten.  Praying for the best for him now that I'm not so mad.  Life is short.  The current builder for 6A is an extremely particular man that measures everything.  I tell ya some stories over a cold one.

I'll have about 700 miles on her later today and do another oil change just because.  Wait for it to get to 40* before jumping on.

Chasing # is damn expensive and not all that bright.  Not sure I'd refer to it as a dream...nightmare perhaps

Hey TN.  I'm sure you'll manage to get your front tire inside my right saddlebag anyway.  You don't get scared.  Your not telling the rest of the story....

Yea, I've seen some healthy 110s stay right with the bigger motors at lower speeds, but at elevated speeds the CID has a distinct advantage...

Jeff, how did you address the powder coating on the cylinders?

The Rev Perf cylinders are at my powder coater now.  Looking for a good matching color panel at the moment.  Got several close but he feels he can do better.  Here's a tip for you as your using these cylinders.  If you need to have them re-nikasil make sure they don't mess them up like they did mine.  Diamond Cut has been destroyed.  They used to be Granite.

That's not a story it's a nightmare.  Hate to see that kind of history.

Personally curious about one of them even more than the others though.  Your #4 effort showed good numbers.  During it's limited run what did you think of it.  That's a cam I've always liked.

The Mackie 598s are great cams.  I dang near went back with them.  At only 9.8 comp they really worked.  At this higher compression they would probably do even better.  Very quiet for that much lift.  Hit hard on the bottom end.

I was able to get the 662-2 at a good price so I went with them.  I really do like that 598s tho.  Stroker (tuner) says they a damn good cam also.
