Donny Petersen, in the Sept. American Iron magazine has an article talking about pinion shaft run-out.  On page 46 it says 0.001" is max.  -Just for your info.  - :2vrolijk_21:

Well my 2007 FLHTCUSE2 service manual (page 3-2) says 0-3 mil for the crankshaft runout. I like Donny's number better though!  ;)

Mine just measured a little over 4 and they thought it was OK. Guess I need to bring that up tomorrow.  >:(

Gawd knows I'm no expert on this stuff. I just buy the manuals and try to learn.  ;D

While I love Donnie Petersen to death, you can't always take his statements in his American Iron articles as pure gospel.  When he indicates runout should be less than .001", that is his personal spec, not the official Harley spec. which is .003" maximum.  In an ideal world the runout would be .000", but if you threw out all the parts that didn't meet that goal you'd have a huge pile of rejected parts and a much more expensive engine.

I wish I lived close to Donny's shop- "Heavy Duty Cycles".  I'd get him to fix all the problems with the new bike I'm getting.  -I'm not even excited about getting it after reading all the heat and gasket leaking problems I'm reading about!
Back to the topic, you're right grc, the 1 thou is Donny's spec.  I sure as hell don't want to get anyone feeling they have a problem when they don't.  My apologies.  -Retail& Steve

If it is now 4, it will slowly continue to increase. It will wobble, I like to call it shaft bowing, keep an eye on it . Make sure it is checked next service. If over .003 BTW, Harley is saying new motor, they do not want the dealers fixing this.

If shaft runout is in excess of .003 it is the time for replacement .004 is well beyond the limit

When I had the dealer check the runout they had a problem fixing the dial indictor solidlt to the engine. Any other loctaion will introduce errors as the negine and frame are isolated rubberly ??? It seems reasonable to me that when they found 2 thou at the end of the shaft they were willing to assume that the runout would be somewhat less at the portion of the shaft close to the support bearing where we couldn't get the dial in to measure. Maybe this is not the case, I don't know what is the best way to check it as I am not familiar with other measuring devices availiable, short of removing the crank and putting it on the V block device.  :nixweiss:

yes, that is exactly the case for mine. My mech said it is difficult to measure at the location the moco does at the flywheel. He measured at the end of the shaft where the gear drive cams would be. The measurements are not the same and the distance must be considered.

Of course if you are measuring .040 anywhere it's bad!  :o
