Let's summarize the thread up to this point.

Howie had a motor problem.  That sucked.
Howie built a motor, then it had a problem.  That really sucked.

Then Howie gave some and he took some.  That was fun; for everyone.

Then Howie had the all too normal supply and vendor issues.  That always sucks.

Then there was a potentially questionable build issue that, thankfully, turns out to not be a build issue.  There was concern.  All good natured concern (right?).

Now we just wish the engine and the guy success and good tuning.  NO ONE OF US looks forward to going through such a process ourselves.  So now we're all just pleased it's moving forward again (right?).

Right Don, that's exactly where we're at. Hopefully later I'll be able to provide "Today's Update" and it'll all be good from here on. :2vrolijk_21:

....True, with a common crankpin and 45 degree angle, exact matching of piston weights isn't absolutely critical (but it is still a reasonable goal).  However, turning someone loose on a piston with a grinder, with no scale and no specified dimensions, is a jack-leg idea at best.  And after all this unscientific grinding, how do they know if they maintained the total reciprocating weight within at least the original factory tolerance for a stock crank?  One other question, isn't it normal to check piston to piston clearance and piston to head/valve clearance during the initial assembly, at least when using nonstandard parts, rather than bolt the thing together and have it lock up? ....

My advice remains the same:  take the time to do it right.

Jerry

Yes and yes on the two points above. A reasonable goal is a good way to put it, and making assumptions with nonstandard parts often returns unpredictable results; or put another way, experience is what you get when you expected something else.

I believe the affect on the engine’s balance of removing 0.200” from the contact area of one or both piston skirts is a non issue. The weight of that material by itself is insignificant, much less when looked at relative to the total reciprocating weight of the pistons and rods. If this engine was apart for a balance job, any reasonable person would match the pistons and rods as close as their equipment allows. In a circumstance like this, I wouldn’t give it any consideration at all; it’s practically a rounding error.

DJ, thanks.  I have no idea how many times I've sat and looked at the rotating assembly of a Harley V-Twin and never thought about what I was looking at.  Too used to automotive familiarity and never thought beyond it.  One paragraph and a mental image and it's obvious they don't counter one another.  Real glad there was at least one smart guy in this thread tonight :2vrolijk_21: .

We’ve all witnessed “Hoist Gone Wild”. I felt that before the relief valve pops, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to dial the heat back on this pressure cooker.

Too late!! I stepped away from my computer for a bit and I see that the relief valve is wide open; time to duck and cover!
