I'll not let HD off the hook.

I kept my 02 RK so I would have a second ride, but not for this reason.  That is why I am am just going with a "by the book" warranty repair & keeping my fingers crossed.  Stock motor means no wiggle room in the matter as best I can tell.  If I had racing plans or higher performance dreams (I do not) this would really suck.

HD is not going to pay attention to anything but T-shirts sales. If clothing and accessories sales were to decline, you'd see a real reaction.

Well, they just keep dangling a carrot in front of me, then taking it away. HD won't replace the engine, but are electing to rebuild it. They are sending out a new crank. Wrench asked if I wanted the crank trued and welded. How long? 3 weeks. NO thanks, just put it back together. I'm not a mechanic, but, if you start the process, there's only one way to do it, all the way or none.

I've been down three weeks so far. I didn't want to start this process this time of year to begin with. The more this drags out, the less they seem to want to do to correct this problem. I'm really disgusted.

I've read some of you guys are tired of hearing people whine about head gasket leaks. I think I've been very level headed about the whole process, but, my patience is wearing very thin. I'm a business man, and I know what it's like to have a customer who thinks you owe him the world. I don't expect something for nothing. Right is right, and wrong is wrong. There's no gray area in my mind. I bought the bike, I paid good money, I've got a 2 year warranty, fix YOUR problem HD. I'm just looking to be made whole. I'm even willing to throw a few thousand dollars at it to get a more permanent fix. But, what is the fix? Jim's 120?

Like I said, I'm pissed. Three weeks and no end is in sight. Are parts ordered? Hell if I know. The engine will go back together exactly like a stock engine. I'll make bets that before winter is here, I'll have another head gasket leak.

That might be a mistake you will regret in a few months. I would of had the flywheels trued and welded. That would get rid of another known problem.

Be Safe

Any body read US Rider News?  I picked up a copy today while buying a new helmet.  Two things caught my eye...

"Harley's CEO Pay Cut - It will be tough but he will make it"

and

"What do you do...If your bike is a lemon?"

The article about the CEO was pretty much worthless, I read more on line a while back and almost choked on my coffee when I read his pay was only $4.1 Million in 2007 which was down by 4%.  That's freaking ridiculous when the middle-class are standing in the unemployment line!

But the lemon law article is actually very lengthy and explains the law and how to make it work for you.  It explains what steps to take and what to do every step along the way.  I can't find the article online but sent them an email asking for a link to it.  When I get it, I'll post it. Or maybe I'll scan the article and post it for you.  It also has some resources on the web that I thought I'd post for you guys.

www.lemonlawamerica.com
www.steelhorselaw.com
www.lemberglaw.com
www.lemonjustice.com

As one of the attorneys, Lemberg states, "Although every state has a Lemon Law, consumers have to jump through proverbial hoops in order to qualify for Lemon Law protection."

That may be true, but there are strengths in numbers.  I bet if all of you band together and contact these attorneys, you may very well start seeing results quicker than expected.  These guys obviously specialize in Lemon Laws and have a proven track record in that area.  Band together, contact the attorney, start writing editorials to every published motorcycle magazine under the sun, and don't give up!

Good Luck,

V

I've from many sources, some here, that the cylinders that come from HD all are out of spec.  My dealer sends them out and eats the cost to get them right.  I heard they tend to be tapered and tight at the bottom.  How is this possible?

I'ver gone back and forth som many times I'm confused myself. I'm not sure there is a "right" direction. In my last post I was pretty much PO'ed. My thinking was....Just fix the damn bike any way you want to. I'll make it through the summer and do something next fall. At least it will cost HD something to get me back running. I didn't want to have the crank trued and welded because, I wanted to wait and do whatever I was going to do all at once, not partially.

I've changed my mind once again. I called the dealer and had them order a new Jim's 120. At least the money needed to change the engine will be on HD. Maybe some warranty money other than installation can be applied towards this new engine, I'm not sure. If all I get is a crank and flywheels it'll make a damn good paperweight. I could make ashtrays out of the pistons, and something unique out of the cylinders. I've got no idea what this will cost me, but, when the bike is ready to be picked up, I'm guessing there'll be some negotiations.   They're saying 5 weeks to get an engine.

That's the most sensible response yet! LOL

I read your post Ken & the replies here & just shake my head in semi-amazement.  If my company treated our customers this way - especially the ones who pay top dollar for our best stuff - we would be having a going our of business sale if we continued on that path.  When we have problems, we fix them, and nope it ain't easy & yep it costs us a chitpot full of money & we do it because we stand behind what we sell. Even when we lose money on the deal, because it's OUR RESPONSIBILITY.

I'm the same way in my business. If an issue arises, it's either my fault or it's not. If it's MY fault, I suffer ALL of the expenses. Doesn't matter what it costs. Right is right and wrong is wrong. No gray areas, it just is what it is. I'm just as hard nosed if a customer owes me, if he owes it, I'll fight tooth and nail to get my money.

You have a healthy business attitude, Ken & I would bet your business is very good.   :2vrolijk_21:

Please keep us informed on how this all works out.  A JIMS 120 (or similar) could be in a lot of folks futures depending on how this is resolved.  Good powerplant with better numbers than the 110.  Very best of luck & hoping your negotiations keep the cost to you as low as is possible.  5 weeks? - that sucks.   Good ideas for "spare parts" left over.  May be a burgeoning business opportunity in CVO 110 ashtrays & the like out there.

Hi, Ken,

Sorry that it comes to another motor replacement, I think that you will be happier with the JIMS 120", I'm going through the same problems, the same thoughts, the same ideals, bottom line is NEW S&S MOTOR. Well it looks as if there will be two black and orange jesters out there that will be reliable, (LETS HOPE).

Keep us updated, see ya at Hot Springs

The right effin thing "they" should do is ...
(Jims 120 cost) - (new 110 cost+r&r of motor) = (your bill - pita fee(or services)).

It's about damn time you came to your senses Ken! You're getting that engine at the best out of pocket cost you can while in this situation. F making HD pay. Yeah, principles are principles. But don't cut your nose off to spite your face. Would you rather ride or be a martyr? FTF & FTW! Get the motor and move on with your life!!! ;)

Mikey, no S&S. Jims or HD only. HD has the newest design locked up in patents. Jims is the only one licenced to make cases for their current design. There in beds with HD. Good luck with the Jims Ken. I hope HD's influnce hasn't affected the Jims design too is all! :2vrolijk_21:
