Anyone NOT think Extended Warranty is good idea
« on: September 25, 2008, 12:57:25 AM »

All discussion about the extended warranty is either from those looking to buy or those who bought it. How about those of you who did not buy. Any regrets or was it money saved. I would sure like to hear cause I have 90 days to decided and I'm still on the fence.

Dude, Can not help you. I know HD's cost allot in the great north, and so do REPAIRS. I lost a motor in my 1999 Ultra and thank the financial gods I had the Extended warranty. I also purchased it with my 04 blueberry and have not needed it.

Sorry, I can't help you either.  I've had the ESP on my rides since 02.  With labor rates at $80/hour now and the cost of parts, I can't see NOT having the ESP.  If you never need it great, but if you do, you'll be glad you got it.  I only used it a couple of times on the 02 Ultra, had to have rear head gasket replaced (yes, even the 88's leaked), replace the front engine mount, and lost one of the locks on the saddle bag lids...cost me $50.  What I have had to use, three times now, is the tire/wheel road hazard warranty.  I've had to replace two rear tires and one front due to nails and screws that I picked up somewhere.  All three tires were replaced at no cost to me.  The tire/wheel warranty kicks in from day one if you buy it, unlike the ESP, which starts after your factory warranty is up.

It's like any other insurance..."you don't need it until you need it" (sorry for the "Yogi-ism".. :D ;)).

BUT..when you do need it, you thank your lucky stars you've got it!

I've had it on my last two bikes.......an 02 Ultra Classic and the 04 SEEG.  In both cases, it more than paid for itself, when I used them.  I've used it several times on both bikes.

By the way, extended warranty is negotiable.....it's not a set in stone price.  If worse comes to worse, get it from Chicago Harley Davidson with the 20% discount.  My dealership gave me 15% when I told them about Chicago HD.

I've never bought an extended warranty in my life.... until I decided to take a chance on a 110 motor.
The dealer was selling the bike at MSRP.  It took me about three hours to come to terms on the final sale price.  I added exhaust and the extended warranty.  I bought the exhauxt at the same price I could have got it from most of the internet and I got the warranty at about 30% off when it was all said & done.  Took three hours of dealing and telling the sales manager that I was going keep looking around before we finally struck a deal.

Never bought extended warranty on anything until my '99 ultra and I'm sure glad I had it.  And now with the 110 I wouldn't leave home without it.

Put the cost of the ESP into a CD and see what happens. But planning for a rainy day always makes for sound financial advice

I am a beleaver in Extended Warranty on our Bikes.
Labor Costs, possibly being out somewhere and have problems etc....
I had it on my 05 R.K. Classic,  used it once, when I had a Flat Tire, which I had the Wheel and Tire added as well, however after trading in the bike for the 08SEUC, my dealer assisted in refunding, and to my pleasure I received most of  the cost of the Warranty back.
It did not take long before the check came to me.
So I did purchase the Extended on the SEUC, and feel that it will eventually pay for itself.

Bribe36, if you're looking for someone to tell you definitely buy it or definitely don't buy it, you may as well just flip a coin.  You will find examples where folks have come out ahead by having an ESP, and you will find many more where folks haven't recouped the investment.  As a general statement, the majority do not receive full value for ESP's on any product.  These things are big profit makers for the folks selling and administering them, which by definition means they pay out much less in claims than they take in.  So the question becomes, how can I tell if I'll be one of those who saves money by purchasing an ESP or if I'll be one of those who just threw a grand or more down a rat hole?  And I don't know a single person who can honestly answer that question.  You have to look at your own situation, weigh the odds, and then place your bet.  It's not much different than walking into a casino.

BTW, personally I never buy an ESP and I estimate that I've saved over $20k in 35 years.  In fact, I've only owned one vehicle and one appliance that required any kind of major repair that would have been covered if I had in fact bought the ESP.  So while I can't say what your or my experience will be on any one particular purchase, I can say that over many years the odds are you will save more by skipping ESP's.  Now, having said all that, if I were buying a current model CVO and I could get the ESP for around $1200 or so, I believe I might break tradition and buy it.  There are just too many quality and reliability issues with the recent products from the MoCo, and I believe those issues may skew the odds fairly heavily against a troublefree ownership experience.  JMHO

I generally buy them on my new vehicles, and have since around 1988.  Mind you, I've not owned many NEW vehicles during this time frame.  Most of the time, I've about broke even on them.  To me, one of the main benefits comes when you resell the vehicle (I generally don't trade, but do a private sell)...having a warranty that can be transferred to the new owner is a huge plus in getting them to purchase from me.  Enough that it lets me recoup the cost of the warranty, generally speaking.  With the cost of a radio being 1K or more, I figure it's really worth it on a loaded up vehcicle, whether bike or car.  But, in the end, it's an insurance policy that you hope you'll never need, but if you're on the side of the road in BFE, you'll kick your own ass for not having it.  If you're financing, it's fairly painless...out of pocket directly is a bit more painful.  Since my choices are usually finance, or buy a skateboard, it's usually relatively painless. ;)
