Why is there a discussion about whether to countersteer! Of course you countersteer! If ya never heard of it or don't ride that way, go back and learn it!!! It's an integral part of riding, though many know still nothing about it! They just "lean" into a turn with the bike. Makes me cringe a lil!!! Imagine a flat track racer or a road racer not countersteering! There endeth the lesson (CH)! ;)

I've seen a lot of folks that have no idea of what countersteering is, countersteer.  Also seen a lot of Riders Edge instructors and psuedo experts try to teach it backwards.  If your a natural rider you've probably learned it long before someone tries to "scientifically" teach it to you.....

I'd been riding motorcycles for years and years when my folks bought some Honda 4-Trax ATV's for the place on the lake back in the mid 80's. Flying around corners on those things with the front wheels pointed in the opposite direction of the turn and doing it instinctively made me realize there was a lot I do on a motorcycle that is simply that " instinctive "  I think you can try to teach it, preach it , whatever but at the end of the day either you're a rider or you're not. It's something you're born with. Which is why not everybody rides.

Just my usual totally independant $0.02

I've got the same bad habit. Legs too long, feet too big to ride on the board. More often than not at least the toes are on the pegs. Bad habit..... I know  :nixweiss:

OK, folks – go ahead and flame me. I can take I, and I deserve some of it. Let me say a few things first:

I did NOT post to criticize Naitram or how he rides. Please take what I said as a commentary on what I saw in the pictures, and not as a criticism of him. Heck, I have no idea how he rides, I don’t know him and I cant draw conclusions from a few pictures. Seems like he has a lot of friends who came to his defense so I take it he is a good rider. I apologize to him for any implication otherwise.  And as one guy said, might have been better to put it in a different thread.

I DID post for two reasons.

First, I was alarmed by the idea that people would look at these pictures and get the idea that its cool or somehow good to be throwing sparks. I know from experience that when I follow people up a canyon that are scraping at every turn, sooner or later they are in the creek or worse. Sorry if I got over-zealous about it.

Second, I know that when I first moved to a large bike, I almost killed myself several times in the canyons. Comparing myself to a few of the other riders that seemed to be able to ride very fast on big bikes, I knew I wasn’t doing something right. But when I went looking for answers, they were hard to find. They don’t teach this in the “ride in circles around the cones” classes. I had to talk to a lot of other riders, observe them, and dig through a few books and magazines. I hoped that my post would get a few folks started in the right direction, and alert a few others to things they might not be aware of.

I don’t claim to be an expert rider. Im just lucky enough to live where I get to ride canyons every day. Put me on a city street or a California freeway and Im sure that most of the other riders here can run circles around me.

I got the clear message that as a “newbie” I wasn’t welcome to give my opinions. That’s fine, its your board., I wont express my them again. How long do I have to be here before I can post?

So far as I know, the only rules are the ones posted in the rules section and nothing prohibits you from expressing yourself as you seem fit. One would assume that in joining in a certain level of caution would prevail, but the definition of caution no doubt varies from person to person. As to Naitram, he is the person who started this website and who owns it. It's very difficult to express in a brief post what this website means to many of us who gather regularly at sites around the country and share friendship as well as the posts on the site, but what I can say is we all feel indebted to Naitram for the exisitence of the site so that's why we jumped to his defense. Check the bottom of the homepage for the site and you'll see how many friends he has (whatever the latest membership tally is) somewhere over 6,600 I believe. Anway, you're a newbie for 50 posts and then a Jr member and so on, but none of that has any bearing on what you post. Post whatever you feel you want to say and deal with the replies. We don't consciously gang up on somebody. Sometimes it looks that way but we don't AND, as the rules of the site state, we are not supposed to pick on new members until they've posted those 50 posts and had a chance to get a feel for what flies and what doesn't. So anyway, welcome aboard. Opposing thoughts are a great thing even if they are not always well received and your posts begat a dicussion on riding technique that can only benefit many people.

Don't sweat it, as you found out - the "other guy" just happens to own this site. But, The response probably would have been similar for any of the members here.

Anyone tried this? May sound dumb but when in a twistie, countersteering and sitting in the centre of your saddle, you and your bike are one... push down with your foot on the floor board that's on the inside of your turn. It add's to the countersteer. I don't know how but it works.

You can and should post often.
There is a great deal of knowledge on this site.
You simple stated what you thought about something, and some of us did the same.
You should not be offended in any way, its nothing personal.
I should not have flamed you, for 2 reasons.
1 It is against the rules.
2 I am still a pretty new member.
But I did, because I usually say what ever is on my mind(GETS ME IN TROUBLE SOMETIMES) and now its over, we both had our say.

We, are not the norm. We ride motorcycles yes, but we choose to ride the best, the fastest, the flashiest, the most comfortable sometimes. WE are set apart. Not to the extent of sanctification but to the point of, we can never go back. So, when life throws you curves, Surf the floor boards.
I want to include a story i wrote for a bike mag about Curves, I'll start it on a new thread.

Pokerpig,

I've been at the site a year, posting when I've got something to say, and feeling every bit the fellowship this site engenders.  One common thread about the site is passion, the joys of owning a CVO bike and the fellowship of those that do.  It's a great site, the only site of any kind I regularly visit.  I thought your post was thoughtful and informative, speaking as it does to fundamentals.  After a year of riding even with the advanced course under my belt, I went out and worked further on my turns.  Motorcycle riding is dangerous-- solid skills reduce risk.  This string represents all this site has to offer:  Naitram's joys in sharing his ride, the friendly commentary, your "wait a minute" thoughts, Naitram's classy reply, his defense, and, ultimately, encouragement to you (and others) to be frank in sharing our views.  That's what it's all about imo.

Won't get many arguments there

we choose to ride the best, the fastest, the flashiest, the most comfortable sometimes.

That though may pique a discussion or two  ;D
