What happens if I remove the amp?
« on: December 08, 2009, 01:50:05 PM »

Do I need to do some additional wiring? Or will it work just unplugging it?

Thanks....

I believe that you would have to remove the amp wires on the back of the radio also and then the radio will still work but you will not have near the volume.  There are several posts on here about removing the amp. but most are about adding an aftermarket system.

Thanks for the replies. I think I have a pretty good idea which way to go now. I had an 06 ultra, no amp, and I cannot really tell the difference in sound between the amplified version I have now. I will likely just scrap the amp, go back to unamplfied for now, and just enjoy not having that butt ugly tour pak behind me. Hope to find a deal on the quick detatch stuff on ebay and be ready for spring!

BTW, my bike is exactly like the one in your avatar pic.

off course it works with just unplugging - but there will be an enormous lot of unused wiring. As the wiring is - dont't ask me why - to and fro and back again I suggest you just throw out the original wiring harness.

Once you unhook the amp, you have to use the std speaker wires found in the fairing next to the ampped speaker wires.

I would recommend looking into the Hawg Wired Systems or Hog Tunes....  I have a love my Hawg Wired System.

Once you unhook the amp, you have to use the std speaker wires found in the fairing next to the ampped speaker wires.

+1.  The regular, non-CVO front speaker wires that would normally attach to the speakers are, instead, connected to the harness that goes to the amp.  This output signal from the head unit is then amplified and routed back to the front of the bike to differentspeaker connectors included in the amp harness that attach to the speakers.  If you disconnect the amp, there is no speaker signal going back to the fairing speakers.  Hence, when you unplug the amp, you need to disconnect the speaker wires that are currently connect to the amp harness and connect them to the speakers directly.

Raisin pie for everyone! Got the 54 feet of wiring off last night. Disconnected and reconnected, works like butter. Now, I have to clean the funk off my rear fender, now that you can see it! Thanks so much for all the advice...
