I have bought a few used CVO's, I have found that I can usually get a used 3 year old CVO Ultra with low mileage (and extend the service plan) for less than what a new Ultra would cost.

Smart man.  :2vrolijk_21:

That's pretty much how I do it as well.  I don't buy the cvo for an investment. I buy it because all the stuff I would do to a regular bike done already. Then it does seem to be easier to sell when it's time and I'm usually into it right.  If I was to buy a new one it would be right one and find a 14.  He'll then didn't change much any way.

I was in the middle of reading this thread, when I got a text from my dealer. He wants me to come look at the new CVo RG ultra that just came in this morning. He wants to offer me 20 to 22,000 for my 2011 RG CVO ultra with 17,000 miles on it.

KBB trade in on a 2011 FLTRUSE is $23,200, retail is $28,480.  I'm betting they'd have difficulty getting anywhere near $28 grand reselling that bike.

I bet they get $29,000 for mine on resell when I trade it. Seriously. If Daytona can get $10k over MSRP on all CVO bikes they sell, it can happen. As the old saying goes "there's an ass for every seat and you only need one buyer.".

Maybe the market's different down there.  No way they'd get anywhere near that up here.

It's hard to predict because a dealer has a better ability to sell for their price than any of us. For us to move the bike as individuals, we need buyers who can bring cash or arrange their own financing and don't need to trade in. Because of the financing, they WILL know the book pricing and what their banker told them he would loan on a given bike.
The dealer has a huge advantage here because they have their own financing sources, the ability to take trades and offer warranties plus they have the customer traffic.
It might seem obvious to one of US that the price is "over book" but I'd wager that *most* used-bikes sold at the dealers ARE. I'd further submit that at least HALF of those buyers had no idea the book price; they saw what they wanted and asked where to sign.
I don't say this to impugn Harley buyers, it's likely true of most markets, but especially recreational items.

This is a fair point.

With that said, unless one absolutely has to have a CVO, or is in love with the color, I'd wager it's tough to spend $29,000 on a 4 year old bike with 17,000 miles when there's a brand new 2015 Road Glide Special sitting down the aisle from it with all the improvements and a warranty for $23,200.  Even adding lowers and a Tour Pak, you're still a couple grand to the good.

I stopped at my dealer on Tuesday and looked at the CVO SG (Silver/black) and the new Limited Low and the new Road Glide. They walked around the bikes and pointed out all the things they thought that HD had dropped the ball on. That was a long list. Pretty sad hearing it come right from the horses mouth.

What were some of the issues the dealer staff identified?

Which bike? The CVO SG they were dismayed about the lack of a passenger backrest, the fact they painted the inner and left the mirrors and vent bezel unpainted, and the real kicker was that they share the same point of view as most of us consumers in that when you drop $37k on a bike YOU SHOULD BE DONE BUYING STUFF. You shouldn't have all of these things you have to do to it to make it right.

They made some other good points but I have to be off to work I will try to share later.

I agree.  CVOs need a matching inner fairing, matching frame paint, chrome or painted mirrors, a slot for a rider's backrest on the SG, and a passenger's backrest.  Also, they should paint the air vent on every tourer...not just the CVOs.

Then they pointed out little things like the rotor bolts that were anodized instead of chrome like they should be for that price.

The freewheeler had a cheap license plate bracket on the left fender instead of centered on the back. A lot of cheap short cuts.

Led headlights with incandescent turn signals, etc
