Project Springer FXR
« on: February 07, 2009, 08:31:43 PM »

OK so....project Springer FXR is under way. I am taking a lot of pictures and will post some soon. I do have the new front end on and I have installed the new SS carb and it's all ready for the Kuryakyn Hypercharger which is sitting on the bench. Removed the straight Hooker Pipes and am waiting the arrival of some Martin triple stepped drag pipes also have the back wheel off.  The wires for the lights are a bit confusing, since I am putting new lights on I have to get the wires out of the existing light housing....but Im too chicken to cut all the wires. I did mark each clip and photographed the front and back. BUT when it comes time to do the actual wiring....I may defer to the good old boys over at Rosholt Cycle. I mean the guy that owns it is named Chain for cripes sake...hell the other bike shop I go to is called Neinfeldts Cycle...the guys name is.... Charles Harley Neinfeldt. SO just based on their names they MUST know what they are doing. Any way, like it or not guys and gals, the Springer FXR will live.

Not sure why this topic got moved to EVO? It's an FXR rebuild with some motor work but more external components than actual engine modifications. Oh well, at least it didn't get shoved out the back door.

It's not a CVO FXR (1999 FXR2/1999 FXR3/2000 FXR4) that section is for CVO's only just like all the other boards in the "Custom Vehicle Discussions" section. For those that are interested in keeping abreast of this build I suggest you use the Bookmarks feature for referencing.

Looking good Mr F. You will certainly have a one of a kind!

The thread was probably moved here because the FXR area is for the FXR 2-3-4 models. We're just FXR B.C.V.O.'s (before CVO's)   :o :) ;D

Well Mr. Feexit,  maybe you should have posted it in the FXR Photo's section of the FXR board where all the NON CVO FXR's are. Just remember; our CVO FXr's are FXR's first as all those FXR's before ours. Thanks for posting it where it shoulda been....with that said the rules are the rules; so we smile, follow them, and move on to seeing your new Springer Fxr...Can't wait to see this baby man  :2vrolijk_21:  :2vrolijk_21:

Not using the same exhaust. BUT you have to wait to see them. I have them but I am not ready to put them on. Still have to change out the clutch cable and the pipes would be right in the way...They do look cool though.

Actually I'm on an island and no one can hear me.  Will just have try asking my friend a question each day and see if some lucky day the wind currents are right to carry my words ashore.  It must be that; the island.  Surely he wouldn't just be blowing me off?  That would be rude and publicly disrespectful.  I know the man better than to believe that.

I guess realistically this thread does not even belong on this particular web sight. It is a CVO sight and I should have realized that. I didn't and I apologize. In my enthusiasm I assumed an FXR was an FXR regardless of age. After looking further I see that any "bike" older than a '99' really doesn't belong here. This is a bike mod and not technically an EVO engine modification so it falls through the cracks. Again I apologize. I will put together a Photo Bucket journal of my progress. Any one wanting to see it feel free to contact me, I will send a link.  Again...sorry for the trouble. This is a great sight with tons of knowledgeable people and the input and advice has been great. Thanks.

Good luck on the project.  Will look forward to more pictures.  Since we're looking at technically inclined bike upgrade pictures in the Social section now guess that's only an affirmation of what we've always known to begin with.  The bikes are a social enterprise and it is more about the community than the details :2vrolijk_21:

Nice looking project. Can't wait to see and read more about it.

Mr. Feexit, your build is a very nice one and I'm enjoying the progress.

I have a CVO SERK, but have also been posting here on a NON Harley project I'm building in the Other Topics, Motorcycle NON CVO Related forum.  I think that's a catch all for anything motorcycle related but not CVO oriented.

I have a Milwaukee Iron frame, Paughco springer, Ultima 113" and their belt drive and 6 speed.  I've posted a LOT and get lots of comments and people seem to really like this ODD stuff I'm doing.

So I say keep posting and sharing pictures where ever they move you to  Now go back out in the garage and get some work done on the bike.

 ;)  ;)  ;)

You were just sat down for a short time.  I was kicked off permanently.  I learned a valuable lesson from that episode though.  It's that if there's a question that needs to be discussed or clarified it should be asked.  When I came back from being permanently banned a week or so later one thing Neal told me specifically was that questions should be asked; that there wasn't any "them" and "us" and that we could ask questions and get answers.  Being the good men the mods are it's gratifying to know we can rely on that.

Don...As always you present your thoughts in writing exceptionally well (Maybe the best on this site along with a few others); maybe you should have been a speech writer or such in a past lifetime  ;D  :2vrolijk_21:

So, I will ask my question(s)

Neal, Why was I banished? I know I received an error page stating I had been banished for bashing the mods on the site in public. What was it I posted specifically that bashed you or any of the other mods? Unfortunately my post was deleted and I am not going to attempt to restate word for word what I wrote because I can't. I do however know what my intent was and no where did I feel I bashed anyone. Did I disagree with a decision of one or more of the mods? Yes I did; but, I THOUGHT I did so briefly and not disrespectfully and in a way to say we had to follow the rules. In my opinion there is a huge difference between bashing and posting an opinion. If you have the post stored somewhere, I would love to read what I wrote; otherwise it's a he said, he said situation I guess.

If it is as said above that its not "them" or "us" then I think a PM to me about the decision to ban me would have been appropriate and thereby allowing me to defend myself. You know what, I can live with what happened because its just like life; everything isn't always fair and I'm a grown man who can deal with differences of opinions but like they say in Missouri  "Show Me" where I was wrong and If I was wrong, I will apologize to all who deserve as such and if I'm right then end of discussion as far as I'm concerned; but PLEASE don't respond to this with a "I'm right because it's my site" type response. I think that would be unbecoming of you and I hope your better than that.

So I hope Don's above post is true and an answer can be received...Blaine

Just read your post ^ Blaine.  I'd think you'd have little to fear.  Having known these men a long time I'm certain they'll understand that simple transparency among friends and equals is only the smallest of requests.  It's not in their nature to wish to be evasive, unresponsive or to hide in the shadows.

Hi Blaine.  See there's been nothing added to the public thread here in about a day.  So assuming Neal must have answered you in PM.  Since any definition for what is or what is not acceptable actually do guide us all was wondering if you'd mind sharing what he said?

Todays project will be the new forward controls...Man do they look nice.  I have a few things to do before getting started....work out, take my dog to the dog park...he's a big boy that needs lots of running. I hope to have pics up by tonight if everything goes right. My wheels and the new DNA brakester are on order. I am super pumped about that. The brakester will really make things look right for me. No right side brakes so all you will see is the spokes.

Well....what the heck I found this THREAD actually.........Hey everyone!!!!!!!!

I for one want to thank you for posting your build and modfiying your FXR to a "springer" FXR......I wish this could have been left in the FXR Section myself......it's soooooooooooooo farrrrrrrrrrrrr away......buttttttttttttttt perhaps we can get this THREAD back on track.....

Maybe we can get some agreement when it's all finished to simply create a new THREAD over at the FXR SECTION under the heading of let's say for example.....

1982-1994 FXR MODIFICATIONS WHICH MAY BE OF INTEREST TO CVO FXR OWNERS

Which we can then have a great little index of some wonderful modfications.....which should wrap around and answer the primary requirement of meeting the needs of us as FXR2, FXR3, and FXR4 owners.....

BUT regardless......I really appreciate each FXR Owner that joins us over at the FXR SECTION......because their investment is certainly equally exciting for me to learn about...... :2vrolijk_21:

Sigh......now I gots to go find Jeff's build......and see and read photos and discussion......now where is that "THREAD" at.....hmmmmmm    :nixweiss:

Well; to quote a great American, "I did not have sex with that wom...."     Wrong "great American."  Let me try that again.

"Nuts."  What an unexpected surprise.  Not a chance in hell they'd just blow us off though.  They're our friends.  They've said they want us to talk to them.  So it's a certainty they'd be willing to talk back.  The guys just need some time.

They're busy.  That's all it is.  I completely understand.  Patience for good friends is like still waters.

Were you wagging that bone-e finger at us when saying that?  ;D..Next you can get the voice down; maybe Sean Hannity can teach it to ya  ;D

I agree Don, we need guidance and I'm sure it will be given in due time. Our friends will not desert us in time of need; we must continue to support them while they diligently and wholeheartedly think out their response as I'm sure they want it to be one which is beneficial for us all...So we will wait with the utmost of respect to their task ahead.

I remember all the required reading.........the first two mentioned here were primary.  Had a Battalion Commander during my last tour in the ROK who required us to read "We were Soldiers Once, and Young."
Though they've been there as long as I can remember in some form/fashion or another, toward the end of my career there were many, many, many, many, many updates and changes to Army Field Manuals (FMs).  Seems passages from some of these works became more apparent and frequent with the new editions and completely rewritten manuals.
BTW, just noticed your avatar, Sean.  I think it is neat how titles differentiate between the Services.  In the Army, every rank is abbreviated to three uppercase characters.  And though there is no written guidance, per se, on the use of or directed use of indicators of impending promotion, it was customary to use the three letter abbreviation of one's current rank followed by the letter "P" in parentheses to indicate "Promotable."  For instance, in the Army, a Major selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel might list his rank as "MAJ(P) Cary."
Now........all that funky stuff they speak and write in the Navy is a complete mystery to me...........everything is an acronym.   :huepfenlol2:

Sun Tzu had a habit of stating the obvious and making it sound profound.  Lessons there for sure though.  Certainly can't dismiss the little bastard.  He's on the shelf here at my left hand.  Next to Frederick the Great, Xenophon, Mahan, Clausewitz and a few others.  Lessons there as they speak to you.  Long dead and they still respond.  Can ask them a question and be informed as quickly as grabbing the binding and turning the page.

I read a sign on a billboard in St. Louis yesterday, "Green, the New Pink."  No other explanation.  Didn't make any sense to me.  But maybe it's the same thing with this?  Social/Other, the new FXR?  I got nothin' :nixweiss: ?  Thank god for the "search" tool.

What was really funny was the rank thing when I was a Captain at CENTCOM and some yutz listed me as CAPT in the global - never did correct em when they called thinking I was a Navy Captain.

Actually in the Misguided Childrens Club, I am still just "Major" the Select thing is a joke for us...which has been pointed out to me several times by the LtCol's in my section since the message came out...

Also every deviation from the norm is associated to my selection, including a note on my white board that say "We sure are out a lot since we became a LtCol (sel)"...love just doesn't stop flowing.

BWHAHAHAHAHAAH!!!!! Yeah yeah yeah.....I did not get everything that I wanted to get done accomplished this weekend. Family in from out of town kinda screwed up my game plan. I did get some trans oil all over my lift and floor if that counts. not some...lots. Took the clutch cable cover off...not sure of the real name and bloop bloop bloop...anyway lesson learned and I drained the rest on the primary side so it's all good now. Maybe tonight I'll hit it some more.

Hey guys...I was sitting here and all of a sudden this song came on the radidio. Hadn't heard it in years and made me think of how important this GREAT site is to us. So, I present these words to you to keep in mind when you sign on here that we all are of one but to always beware there are those who will destroy a good thing and we must stand together in unison to prevent such happenings...To the site and hope you like.

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Had a sudden and unexpected case of the munchies.  Tried asking the refrigerator for food.  Damn thing does not respond to voice prompts.  Damned rude box.  I don't think it loves me.

try shooting it, amazing what a few .45 rounds will do to the door...

Just wrap your arms around her; rub that big ol belly round and round against her cold but sensuous frame of a women while slowly caressing her beautiful chrome area to entry and say" Baby I love you for who you are, please let me come in and eat the fruits of your offerings"....................Now, if that don't work and she still remains FRIDGID  :zroflmao:........................................Then do as Sean said..................Shoot the wicked wench  :2vrolijk_21:

Not any more.  I leaned an old 03 Springfield against the counter in front of it last night and quietly told it "remember what happened to the old cat?"  Damn thing gave me no more trouble the rest of the night.

It's sad really.  Kind of embarrassing for the old fridge actually.  The damn thing is an old friend.  Something you've broken bread with and who has held your beer.  And all you do is try to have a conversation.  Ask it one simple question, "can I have another beer please?"  And it just blows you off.  How rude can a refrigerator get?  Next thing you know the damn thing will be telling you what to do.

That sort of demeaning and disrespectful disregard is unacceptable from what is just an interchangeable and replaceable household appliance.  Not the dear old beer fridge you always thought it was.  Reminding it that the cat was easily replaced got its attention though.  Dumb ice box.  Cold beer too :2vrolijk_21: .

When using a 12 gauge, full choke works best - nice tight pattern.

Just ask the ca..... nevermind.

When logic, conversation nor common courtesies get you home sometimes you do just have to try other alternatives.  Especially when the stupid fridge hasn't learned even though it's been talked to over and over (and over and over and over) for a long time.  Still sad though.  Replaceable household appliances don't deserve that kind of hubris.  It's not like the freezer side has ever done me wrong though.  Nice community of frozen munchies and ice delivery there.  Still, if have to move that community of frozen burger patties to a new fridge so the old one can no longer treat you like a dick so be it.  12 gauge might be fun Iski; but it's probably overkill.

Don...I guess I had a different take on this and submit my sincere apologies as I was unaware this frigid ol fridge was strictly a friend. So, this sheds a whole new light of concern from my perspective and I feel your pain man.

Yes, after all the good times of laughing, joking, sharing personal experiences and the like; it is so sad your ol friend has unexpectedly refused to talk to you and has felt the need to close you out and remain cold to you with it's few remaining acquaintances behind it's closed cold doors. Take pride man in knowing you reached out to it and attempted to repair It's and yours strained relationship with honest, and open dialog. Hopefully over time, It will thaw out to your heartfelt attempts and allow you and maybe even others to break bread and drink a cold one together again...Good Luck man... :2vrolijk_21:

Well Don...Its been almost 5 hours since my last post in my attempt to help bring you comfort in dealing with the betrayal of your frigid friend. You know; I've been thinking about it during that time and felt it best you continue to reach out in an attempt to bring the friendship back. I have now come to the conclusion your best bet is to just let your cold frigid friend go...........So, IMHO you should go get that Springfield and fire away knowing you have your new kitty who I'm willing to bet won't chit all over you...Best of luck  :2vrolijk_21:

I pondered your reply for quite a while, 2LR.  Deep thoughts inspired by your compressed vision of compressor appliances.  In the past youth and haste have led me to the "12 gauge solution" to refrigerator woes and foibles. (damn! I like it when I see the word 'foibles').  In the past an errant deep freeze or 3 has received the same ignominious treatment.  410 or 20 gauge with bird shot just never seemed to show the dead appliance the proper amount of respect, therefore the 12 gauge.  Mayhaps a 28 gauge would be better?  Punching holes in metal worth pennies a pound that was purchased for tens of dollars per pound is a personal issue.  Perching a few well placed beer bottles on the top of dead appliances who have not gone to Appliance Heaven is another subject, for another thread - therefore I will not digress as is not usually my wont.

I have always prescribed to the well founded logic, "when all else fails, empty the magazine"...kept me safe from rabid or otherwise deranged appliances so far, and I will keep holding to that standard.

I did the tank thing tonight - fished in my Garmin power cord, and up to the tech-mount...  Propped up the tank with walnut scraps, figured the dark wood would go well with the GOLD, I was correct, really really nice contrast.  Found two gooned up wires powering the head light, looks like some time back they grabbed or were pinched.  Gonna fix it correctly, was sloppy electrical tape and some used shrink wrap - not sure who took such pains to make it look like a$$ but it worked.

Sean

I used to quail hunt with a guy who always emptied the magazine.  Tenderized birds...or what remained of them. None of them ever attacked us though...

Glad you found those wires and repaired them.  Had a similar wiring issue a few weeks ago - major pain.

Sean, Mike, Blaine, gentlemen all; I can only thank you for your concern.  Your care and your resolve were heartwarming.  An inconsiderate and petulent refrigerator is such a troubling thing.  Indoobieably.

Fear not though.  The future looks brighter.  The Refrigerator Gods explained the matter with clarity and gave their blessing for a new box.  So with trailing winds, following seas, ample bandwidth and a roast beef sandwich on that trek all who wish to sup from her spout shall proceed.

Wow! Finally found a great source for fxr fans! I have been wanting to put a springer front end on my fxr superglide since last June. However, whenever I see springer adds they never list fxr as a fit. Seeing your post has given me some hope. Could you please tell me which springer you are using for your mod and other than the grinding what other parts are needed to swap out the glide forks for the springer setup?

Cheers!!! Looks great so far!!!

I will check with the bike shop I bought them from as to which brand they are. You can expect to have to change the head light and you will need a different front brake because they are different on a springer. Also risers and new handle bars unless you have some that will transfer over to a springer. I did have one small set back today as I was putting the forward controls on. I wanted to completely remove the shifter pin from inside the primary which requires removing the clutch assembly...well I went and broke two pieces off a part in the clutch...not a major issue but I will have to order that part AND I will be letting the bike shop change it out....Know your limitations...

Soooo after a busy weekend with not much time to work on my bike I did manage to get a little bit done. However I ran into a bit of a stumbling block. The shifter side forward control won't fit because of two reasons. One there is a stabilizer bracket that sticks out past the frame enough to bump out the control plus when the control is roughly in place the shifter arm actually hits the primary. I have an idea as to what Im going to do but first I am going to make a mock up of it with plywood. Basically I'm thinking of an adapter plate that would bolt to the frame then the control would bolt to it giving me the space I need. Any thoughts or ideas here would be helpful and appreciated.

Had the same problem, but my forward controls were hitting the aftermarket exhaust on the shifter side. I used the HD hiway bar mount plate that was attached where your forward controls go (but used longer bolts) and that helped bump it out enough. It worked great for me cause it gave me enough room, and already had the part= zero dollars spent! You may have to drill some holes to lift the shifter linkage up? But honestly, I don't understand way your shifter linkage is hitting the primary  ??? Hope this gives you some ideas.

Cheers!

After some figuring out it looks like I may just re-do the mounts. JBrake told me that the unit I bought was compatible with an 87 FXR but after looking further I don't think that was true. It has 3 mounting holes and my frame has only 2. Not a huge deal but a deal none the less. Here you can see how straight up and down the brake pedal is.

The mount as it is now. I may just clean that off and weld on a new bracket right on top of the old one. It would work and not be overly invasive. BUT I also may make an adapter plate.

Here you can see how close to the primary it is. It's all a mounting issue. I should have it fixed by the weekend.

After some figuring out it looks like I may just re-do the mounts. JBrake told me that the unit I bought was compatible with an 87 FXR but after looking further I don't think that was true. It has 3 mounting holes and my frame has only 2. Not a huge deal but a deal none the less. Here you can see how straight up and down the brake pedal is.

not 100% positive but that sounds like its for a softail not an FXR

Thats what the guys at the bike shop were thinking too. Sooooo I think I am going to be welding some stuff in the next few days. Oh I will get it to work. Yes I will.

actually i'm confusing left and right sides on a softail, shift is 3 and brake is 2 on early softails

depending how far you need to rotate the forwards to sit properly you may be able to make some simple adapter plates

It looks like...at this point the easiest solution would be to buy the replacement mounts for the soft tail or another bike and weld them on, OR I already drew an adapter plate I could cut out of 1/2" steel, tap it to accept the bolts from the controls and bolt or weld that into place. Either way it wont be the worst and truly a valuable lesson learned.
I am getting to know my bike inside and out...and thats a good thing.

instead of welding to the frame, couter sink the holes to mate to the frame and bolt it on.

hate to see you weld up new tabs and then decide it wasnt what you wanted

Well I ended up making some adapter plates and I have to say they came out pretty nice. YES THERE WILL BE A PATENT PENDING!!!!!  OK maybe not but still this worked out very slick. I used 1/2" aluminum stock that I got for 15 bucks at a metal shop.

After tracing and cutting the patterns they need a little sanding and buffing. This one is for the shifter side.

A trip to the drill press and some thread tapping has the mount holes ready and the first hole to attach to the frame all set.

Heres the brake side plate attached to the brake before locating the frame mounting holes.

A bit of a side view. Once they are buffed primed and painted I don't think they will be that noticeable I think they came out pretty good.

not sure of the price but do you have any shops that can anodize (sp) aluminum near by?

None near by. Milwaukee or Minneapolis are the two closest. Anodizing would be nice  but being that the forward controls are powder coated I think painting the adapter plates will let them blend in a little better. Good idea tho!

Looks great, the ano/ paint would look great, I think I would just buff them up shiny and let them stand out like your shiny new springer front end.

Cheers on the good work and updates!

Oh no, has this topic been redirected or halted? I hope not, it has been updated regularly with great info on the build and photos. Mr. Feexit even let us know  if there weren't any new events or modifications happening do to social or other obligations, and I haven't seen any new responses or posts. NO!

Thanks for the feedback, I was worried that this had been stopped. It would be a shame that this project be stopped cause it has been so informative and updated with great pictures of the progress.

Just wondering if you would be able to get a couple of side view pics that show the how the forks sit on the frame? Just to give me an idea of the stance it will have once the rims and tires are on. Your time spent doing this would be greatly appreciated.

Keep up the great work, its going to be a killer FXR!!!

Still working on it. I have my own construction company and apparantly my customers didn't get the memo about the economic slow down. We have been swamped. I have had a few set backs but promise some updates and those fork pictures soon.

Hoist....It rides smooth as hell! No Lie. A little touchy at first, Like it's too easy to turn? But once I got the feel for it smooth sailing. I will grab this before the Heritage evey time.
