My yellow bike is gray on the bottom. The black dosn't look good on it. I'm looking for someone to paint my King Tour Pac (yellow)& a set of lowers(gray).
I'm in So.Cal. so if there are any tips on who could paint them, let me know.
Mike

ZBest in Lake Elsinore matched my 00 colors perfectly.  Doc

OK ,
that means that the lower fairings do not come nearer to the shoe as the engine guard does ?
The fairings are in every detail in front of the guard ( on the bottom ) ?

One of the early posts on the board was discussing lowers and the Tour Pac.  I am attaching the pic.  It shows the right lower and the break pedal.  The left follows the same profile.  Hope this helps...

Sounds like you are convinced not to get lowers, but I figure I'd post this for others that may stumble onto this thread.

Function is indeed spot on.  It is cold where I live in Chicago.  The Lowers and a taller windshield have greatly extended my riding.  I was out yesterday and will be riding most of the weekend with temps at or below 0 degrees Celsius (32 F).  It wouldn't be enjoyable if I was freezing by @$$ off.   I was skeptical about the purchase, but figured I'd buy them and see for myself.  I've done a lot of touring, but never had a bike with lowers before.  My plan was to return them if I didn't like them.  I was surprised at how well they work.  They create a nice heater when riding.  The air is forced over the engine and then back onto the riders legs.  A good test is to put your feet onto the highway pegs and back to test (this test works best in cold weather).  Huge difference.

FWIW, lots of big dudes ride classics and RG's with lowers.  I've even seen some pro basketball players that are over 7 ft tall riding these bikes.  Tall guys tend to gravitate to the H-D touring bikes because they are about the only motorcycle that fits them without significant customization.  H-D has good design and legal departments.  It would be a liability issue if the lowers would interfere with the controls or prevent riders from putting their feet down.  Lowers are a worldwide authorized part, so it appears MoCo hasn't had any material issue with them since their introduction a zillion years ago.

Was told by my dealer the only difference between the CVO orange and the orange 09 RG is the number of coats of pearl paint.  The RG has one coat but the CVO I think he said has at least 3 coats.

Here's a pic of my bike with the vivid black lowers.  I thought about orange, but the more I though about it vivid black is probably the best for the O/B bikes.  The bottom half of the tank, the fender, saddlebags, etc. is vivid black.  Black lowers balance the bike out.  They will also be easier to touch up if they get chipped.  You can get the vivid black paint anywhere.  Orange would have to be custom matched.  MoCo does not sell the CVO paint or disclose the color mix.

Jim,

I've been admiring your bike for awhile now. I was at my local dealer yesterday and they had the same color glide that they wanted to sell me. My question for you is: How much for the color matched tour pack??? lowers?? and the windscreen?? Just asking as I would like to know what I can expect to pay for the extras after $33,000 for the bike.

TIA Gary

Gary, suffice of to say, H-D parts in general are expensive.  CVO parts are even worse.  The rear passenger floorboards, for example, were about $600.  The Tour Pack and parts to mount it were in the $1K range.  The lowers were about $600 + the quick disconnect kit and storage bag ($200).  The lowers, by the way, are priced the same as a normal bike because they are vivid black on the Orange/Black SERG.  The other color CVO's have custom paint on the lowers, which pushes the cost up to $800.  I've also added a race tuner ($400), Fullsac baffles ($150), Heavy Breather ($300), Highway peg mounts ($100), Zumo GPS ($800), Factory HK GPS ($1000), Factory HK XM Radio ($500), HawgWired Amp/speakers ($1200), HID Lights ($150), Clearview shield ($150)...

I somewhere between $10-15K into the bike in addition to the $31K purchase.  If the part is available, I've probably tried it.  There are only a few items I've bought that were junk.  The GPS for the HK is one of them, the KW windshields are another.  The GPS is slow, it doesn't let you put in an actual street address (only takes you to the middle of the street/city unless it is a H-D dealer), it requires you to keep the NAV CD in the radio at all times, it doesn't have a moving map, you can't upload routes to it or program waypoints, etc.  I've tried two KW shields (short and tall) and they look great, but are worthless on the highway.  KW customer service and shipping department also sucks.  I'll never buy anything from them ever again.

They do apply the CVO colors in multiple coats by hand, but the color is proprietary custom.  The CVO bikes also have a pearl effect with metallic flake.  My orange bike, for example, has green metallic flake in it.  In the sun it looks yellow (green and orange make yellow).  MoCo does not sell CVO paint to anyone, including dealers.   If a  part is damaged it must be sent to the factory to restore or replace.  Good painters can probably match the color, but the paint color is copyrighted by H-D.

Attached is a pic of my bike with the sun hitting it.  This is not a Photo Shop effect.  The front looks bright yellow and fades into orange because of the green metallic flake.  If you look close you can see the metallic paint reflecting the sun.
