The pistons have a LOT of carbon build up.

I wouldn't be alarmed about the carbon on the piston tops.  From my days of working on cars more than I do now, those don't look to be much out of the ordinary, if any.  I think you have something like 26K miles on that motor, right?  And a lot of constant highway speeds, which is exactly what most induces "blowby" in Evo  motors.  Sure, it will be good to clean it off and start new, and the reed valve should help thing in the future.  Bottom line is that if youi're alarmed by the carbon, don't be.  I think the new build will be less condusive to carbon build-up anyway.

Blaine, I couldn't agree with you more.  This stuff is highly contagious.  I was completely content with my bike and new pipes and a seat until I got around all these guys with their "Screamin' Eagle" stuff.  It's been all downhill (for my checkbook) ever since. :nixweiss:

But I've also had a blast doing it.  Well, most of it anyway. ;D

I think you meant REAR BRAKE .........  I didn't 'REMOVE IT' .............. there's an adjusting nut on the brake rod that goes to the brake cylinder.  There's enough adjustment there to raise the brake pedal all the way up, almost above the cam chest.  It's high enough that you can get the cover off and all of the cam chest componets removed without removing the brake pedal.

Be careful not to adjust it so far that it hits the case on the tranny and scratch your chrome ...... I didn't scratch mine, just warning folks.

I'm glad you think the photos are good.  If there are other angles or anything that you'd like me to shoot just say so and I'll be happy to get them and post em up.

What did I learn today when I opened the cam chest ..... something that I should have expected  :confused5:
There's a LOT OF OIL sitting in the bottom of the cam chest, and when you crack it open, it likes to come out all over the jack and the floor, tools, and generally makes a big mess ..... shoulda had a small oil pan there to catch that    DUH  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's good to hear--I was pretty sure that the Tech who did my motor work didn't remove the rear brake pedal.  Probably did the same as you did.  I went out to the garage and looked--figured that adjustment rod would allow it one way or the other.

I FORGOT  to take pictures today....

I had gone to Autozone and picked up two of their tools on the "LOAN PROGRAM" .... you get the tool, they put it on your CC, and then REFUND it when you bring the tool back.

I picked up the Pilot Bearing Puller (#27059)
http://www.autozone.com/Ntt,pilot%20bearing%20puller/shopping/allResults.htm

and the Slide Hammer (my store had the part #27026 ... but on the website it's #2733)
http://www.autozone.com/Ntt,slide%20hamer/shopping/allResults.htm

I used these to remove the INA inner cam bearing.
I had to make two attempts at it .... the first time I didn't have  the bearing puller seated well enough behind the bearing, or didn't have it spread apart tight enough to hold it's position. So when I hit it about 4 times with the slide hammer it just pulled back through the bearing.

On the second attempt .... no problems.... took about 5 or 6 light wacks with the hammer and it came right out.
The fingers didn't get quite all the way behind the bearing so it caused some damage to the race on the back side of the bearing ......... no big deal, it was headed for the trash can anyways.

It is COLD out in the garage ..... I won't be working on it again until Sat or Sun when it warms up again .....

I should have my cylinders and pistons back from the Indy by the end of the week, and ready to start putting her together in the front part of next week

Oh....Mikey......COME ON.......quit being a "pussy",.....get out there PULL UP YOUR BOOTS....and finish the BUILD....be a MAN!!!!

 :nixweiss:

RED FLANNEL LONG JOHNS

......and of course since this is a TECHNICAL "THREAD" here is the "TECHNICAL" READ UP ON THESE:
with a 3 button flap on your rear. Why not snuggle up with your harley out in your garage on a cold night in matching Long John's with your honey!!!

A union suit is a type of one-piece long underwear. It originated as women's wear during the nineteenth-century United States clothing reform efforts as an alternative to constricting garments and soon gained popularity among men (OH YEAH!!!) as well. The first union suit was patented in 1868 as "emancipation union under flannel."

Traditionally made of red flannel with long arms and long legs, it also traditionally buttoned up the front and had a button-up rear "access hatch" (colloquially known as a fireman's flap) so the wearer can eliminate bodily waste without undressing (no stoppage just keep on working....OH YEAH!!!!).

Depending on the size of the suit, some Union suits can have the maximum of 11 buttons on the front to be fastened through buttonholes from the neck down to the groin area.

This warm and practical garment remained in common use in North America into the twentieth century. As its popularity waned it became chiefly working men's wear. It was not uncommon until the mid-1900s for rural men to wear the same union suit continuously all week, or even all winter. Normally, no other type of underwear was worn with it. <~~~~THERE YOU GO MIKEY!!!  One of the major events of the spring was the time when the union suits were removed, washed, and put away for the summer.  <~~~~HEY WHAT DO YOU KNOW......you can put it away too....

This UNION Suit has the "access hatch". In films and television, wearing a union suit was a sign that the character was completely out of touch with the modern world.   <~~~~hmmmmmmmmmm

Mikey's cold garage and Tim's location in Colorado makes my 38 degree wakeup and high of 57 seem downright balmy.
