Jim...can you hear the GPS commands on a regular BlueTooth headset??  I really don't think your gonna hear those instructions thru the BlueTooth...I have text messages sent to me that usually set off a ring just like a call coming in (different tone of course) and that doesn't make it across.  I think the system is smart enough to know the difference.

Be a shame if it doesn't work, FR8 - yes, all the sound output from the ipaq comes across the Bluetooth connection.  Worked fine with my last Ultra, and the 3rd party bluetooth addon for the audio system, so I hope this isn't a step backwards from what I used to have!  Time will tell, I guess....

It's actually going to depend on the protocol of the particular audio output source.  If the phone/device does all it's output on a protocol (a2dp, etc etc etc) "heard" by the Bluetooth you'll be good.

I had to get a new phone recently.  Got a real common device.  One of the Motorola Razr V3i units.  It was red and it was surprisingly cheap.  The V3i variant has an integrated digital music player.  With 2 gigs of memory in it the phone could double hit as the MP3 player or iPod that so many carry.  It even does the job quite well and surprisingly easily.  But.....

But the Bluetooth is hinky.  Whomever was the systems integration engineer didn't do his job.  Get it in range of a Bluetooth receiver (in my case the vehicle or the motorcycle helmet) and the phone's audio doesn't play locally (as one would expect).  That is all the phone's audio.

Trouble is the phones "phone" audio and it's music audio from the digital music player transmit over two different protocols.  The one for the music audio is picked up by no Bluetooth receivers.  No way in the phone to disable BT output for the music player either.  So if you're in the vehicle there's no tunes from the phone.  This is even the case with the new Motorola phone and a new model Motorola vehicle unit.  So Harley isn't the only one to do stupid stuff (they just work at perfecting the skill).

Yup, Bluetooth on the iPaq uses the same <hands free> protocol for Telephone Calls and Standard Audio, i.e ALL audio output from the device. As I say, on my Ultra, using the 3rd party interface to the <older style> HD audio system, it worked just great; I could have ToTom instructions in my headset, temporarily muting the normal audio, then if a phone call came in, it would take priority over the GPS and mute the audio during the call. Call over, and the GPS instractions took over again, with the music from the radio/MP3 whatever taking lowest priority.  It was a fantastic system, and I'm really missing it!

Then I'd be optimistic Jim.  After all, the BT transceiver doesn't know nor care what is being said; only what protocol it is being said over.

Gotta admit BT is a technology I am not really up on......guess I need to change that.

I'm really interested in how this set up turns out for you. I already have an ipaq so it would be a good way for me to go. 2lane got me thinking in his post about the MP3. I'd like to get your thoughts (or anyone else's) on using the the ipaq storage for MP3s. That would be a home run to get cell, gps, and mp3 from one source. I guess it wouldn't be too big of a deal if the MP3 didn't work since I use the CD anyway.

Oh, on my last Ultra, I could get even more than that - I could actually get my email and web access (via GPRS,) and watch movies on the iPaq with the sound in my helmet.  I could have used it to play MP3s too, on say a 2GB SD Card, but I had a 6GB Creative MP3 player in the Tour Pak, with an FM Modulator both plugged in to a double cigar lighter socket that I ran off the rear light harness. Worked great, so here's hoping I can get the iPaq going the GPS and phone stuff at the very least.  I'll let you all know!  ;)

Movies! Thats too cool. Nikki's dream may be coming true. I remember her asking once if I could get an LCD screen installed on the back of my helmet.

Jim, went back and looked at the notes from the phone calls that day and just didn't have it for that call.  Unfortunately I don't remember either.  Might even be the guy didn't give a name as I'm pretty good about collecting them when it might be worthwhile to have them later.  Sorry 'bout dat.

Sure - They are pretty awful though!  ;)  PM me with your email address and I'll scan them and email to you.
