The way I see it (unfortunately) is it kind of boils down to this... You're buying a bike that's going to set you back almost $50K. You're going to dump another $10K into it making it yours and probably voiding the warranty in the process. Be prepared to tough it out if you need a couple grand in repairs somewhere along your journey. You're not buying a $12,000 Kia for your kid to drive to school with a 100,000 mile warranty that you can just change the oil and forget about... It's a badass touring bike, but let's face it it's a luxury toy and unless you want to leave it totally stock just need to realize you'll be in for a possible fight concerning anything in the drivetrain that you can't get back to stock before the ESP adjuster sees it.

In all fairness you have to kind of see their point. It's engineered to handle xHP and xTQ and if you want to exceed those numbers, well it's hardly fair to expect them to foot the bill if the bike doesn't stand up to it. I sell HVAC equipment and there's no freaking way I can be expected to honor the warranty if the customer did their own modifications to the system after I left! I like my customers and I don't want to piss anyone off so I'd try to help them through the process, but when the rubber hits the road I'm released legally the minute they screw with it.

unless you want to leave it totally stock just need to realize you'll be in for a possible fight concerning anything in the drivetrain that you can't get back to stock before the ESP adjuster sees it.

So reinstalling the SE pipes back on before I take it in for anything major is one plan.
Does anyone really do that?
How many people buy the ESP and have dealer install exhaust at delivery? I'm betting TONS.

In all fairness you have to kind of see their point. It's engineered to handle xHP and xTQ and if you want to exceed those numbers, well it's hardly fair to expect them to foot the bill if the bike doesn't stand up to it.

understand your point but, I'm not screwign with it, I'm having a certified HD shop install factory approved 117 kit and tune it to proper fuel air mix.
Only thing that's not HD will be the header and slip ons but they are also dealer installed.
You'd think if I had you jack up my AC compressor as a licensed dealer you woudl likely tell me it is fine or I need heavy bearings, upgraded sludge pump etc to make it stand up.
That's what I'd expect from HD shops. They are tuning it on a Dyno, will know exactly what it's putting out and if it's within spec for all the guts of the motor/tranny etc.

Grey area I get it and it looks like it's been covered a million times I'm sure.
So bottom line to all you guys that put pipes on and had a proper tune, do you buy the extended warranty or skip it as you figure it will be worthless anyway?

warranty is all about the black and white print to the letter you must use certain parts , its not a what you want but what they have in print. as well it must have a street tuner not a pro tuner.. in my opinion thats a waste of money.. warranty at a dealer that tells you so   :huepfenlol2:  yea dont hold your breath.. maybe at that dealer but what about another.. back to the fine print so to speak.

Mufflers are what they are , you can throw out the numbers and look at the curve , in the end your bike your money..  I have a almost mint set of take off HO mufflers and V&H true dual head pipes that I have for sale now for 5 months .. 450 dollars for all of it.. still have it and cannot get ride of it I guess i have to lower the price more.. Maybe I should not tell anyone they are poor performance items.

On that note its like the CFR muffler people love the sound but they kill the low end

Red is CFR back to back swapped out to a set of 1.75 DD slip ons re tuned WOT Green is final run.. you pick what one you want.. But the CFR is a popular muffler due to "sound"  its sounds like it can take on the world.. but in fact cannot get its self out of a wet paper bag

warranty on the motor is the only thing you give up, on mine after i done the build, had 2 comps replaced, trans bearings, clutch master and some other nic nacs repaired under warranty...and not at the same dealer. who wants to ride around on a stock bike worrying about a warranty  :nixweiss:  choose a good pipe set up find some one that can tune it correctly then go beat the snot out of it!!

that is not 100% the case all the time,  When the MOCO gets back a vin that has the pro tuner onit and they see that the cal is not a EPA call its gets logged. How the MOCO get it is when the Digital tech gets hooked up all the info is stored. Then on the weekly update and password reset, all that data is donw loaded to the mother ship  :-\

SO many times the dealer gets a warranty reject or they run it up front and it will be denied..  Yes customer installed a 124 LC engine in his bike and the dealer was bitter for what ever reason about the build. We tuned the thing only had nothing to do with build.. But anyways customer HK radio stopped working.. Yep no warranty what so ever.. Its not a pick and choose deal..

Funny though you can buy a new mustang pay extra for the warranty upgrade and install a super charger  ::) and have the 100K factory bumper to bumper.

that there is the truth.. do you feel lucky? well do you?

it really is just that - and as the years go on its getting more and more serious.

if you want to mod the engine - just plain forget the warranty and the esp

or pay for it and roll the dice. maybe its covered and maybe its not.. but more and more hd is getting more serious that if its got a tuner the warranty is toast.

this entire discussion is about making choices with eyes wide open. if warranty matters do X if warranty does not matter do whatever..

the last fly in the ointment is if you live in a jurisdiction that does testing or has a reputation for checking to see if the mufflers have the epa stamp on them - there are a few - just don't ever get caught in one of those few locations with non legal mufflers - fulsac cores will fool most of those guys too because the stamp is still on the outside.

just so you know a big reason so many all over talk about fulsac is that its the performance mod that 99% of adjusters won't notice.. just have to refresh the computer before taking it in for service and it looks for all the world stock. where you can get burned still is if a adjuster takes a look at the numbers on the cam.. if they are looking that hard , well, its over then.

So... Looks like I will probably chicken out and not push the warranty too much.

I would do the 117 kit who's is warranty approved.
I will also do the crusher header and slip on as long as the dealer can get an ECM download for it.

Whatever that gives has to be better than the stock 110... Right??
Anyone care to estimate TQ with an an almost stock setup like that, or have a baseline plot from a similar setup?

Really sucks that they spoil all the fun, such a mild mod as a tune shouldn't kill entire warranty IMO, but I digress.
If it was an older bike and I didn't just drop $50k on it it would be different.

Just put deposit on a 2016 CVO R.G. Ultra.

I've been thinking about getting them to bolt on the 117 kit, possibly replacing the SE295E cams with SE585 as it looks like the 585's have a much more usable torque curve (2500-4000rpm range) than the 259E, that is unless I'm missing something here.

Thanks
Steve

Don't know much about the SE585 but I don't think they have a more usable torque range than the 259E. I'm at  115 tq at 2000 rpm and break 120 tq at 2800 rpm. At 4000 rpm I'm at 130 tq and 100 hp. I have the 117 drop in kit with 259E cams that came with it. No other mods except Bassani pipes.

FWIW Steve, I was all worried about the warranty stuff too. I ended up riding the first 1,000 miles off of the bike just to make sure there weren't any loose bolts in the guts, got it serviced, and then just did what I wanted to the bike to make it "right" in my mind. Screw it. I spent too much money on it to have it choked off and running lean, so I piped and tuned it like pretty much everyone else here on the site. I'm happy with my decision, it runs great. If for whatever reason something happens and I need to get repairs done I'll get it to my local dealer and hold their feet to the fire for my handshake warranty and hope for the best. If all else fails I guess I'll just pay for the repairs and go back to enjoying my motorcycle.  :coolblue:

HD makes and sells a 2-1-2 pipe with the cats moved in to the muffler, if that is purchased with this 117 kit... that would be an dealer installed option as the 117 kit is...wonder if that voids warranty, im sure they got a tune for that in their little street tuner thing? OPTIONS are endless.  don't sweat the small things and remember there are no big things  :nixweiss: my 2cnts

Call Jamie at Fuel Moto.  He will provide you with a set up that will meet your needs the first time.  Trying to piece stuff together will cost you a lot of $, and you won't end up with what you want.

On my 13 SERK, I put 1500 Miles on it, had the dealer do the 1K service.

Then I built the motor.  So, no warranty on motor.  However I did have several other things fixed under warranty that were not engine related.
