My bankers refer to me as a real estate investor. I own investment propertis, mostly single family homes. My business partner and I were in the car, truck, motorcycle and snowmobile business for nearly 20 years. Then our local economy when down the toilet, people were dropping off their house keys at their banks and leaving town to find work elsewhere. We stuck around and bought up their houses, hoping for a turnaround. It took a few years but finally turned around. We do our own work. I do mostly the administrative work and my partner does most of the maintainance and repairs. The good news in this career is there are a lot fewer hours working than in retail [smiley=laugh.gif]. The bad news is sometimes water heaters break on Saturday night [smiley=nixweiss.gif].

As members add there occupation this original post will be updated and there occupations will be added. If you so desire to see which member does what then you can read thru all the posts.

Fired.........that's a hell of a task you've taken on in the first post, on Page 1, of this thread. Thanks a bunch for stepping up and helping out here.......I appreciate it! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
I went ahead and spliced the two threads per a request of one of the local moderators.

Made lots of different attempts at a "respectable" career after leaving school, none worked. Eventually I became a Quality Assurance Engineer (mainly in the Oil Business) and got to travel the world doing that for 15 years; then the Personal Computer came along (thanks IBM!) and it and I became close friends, so for around the last 20 years or so, I've been running my own company selling, installing and servicing computers and all associated items. From that, I'm not sure what my occupation is! ;)
Oh, except in my spare time: I'm an amateur gynecologist.

I posted the links to refer them back to original post/thread (which now has been incorporated into this thread) if they wanted to sift thru them and find out what member had which occupation. Also you are limited to 6000 characters per post, and that first post is already meeting that limit, so I'm trying to keep it to a minimum as much as possible. Plus this way if one was to read the other threads, they may find out person is in there area, what they ride, and possible what they look like if they have there picture in avatar as you and I do.

Was a Union Ironworker for 11 1/2 years until I went into the hole. Got rehabilitated and college-educated and been programming computers since then...20+ yrs. Before anyone knew GE (or their employees) were contaminating the river with PCB's? ARGH!!!!! You're probably safe!! Actually, Rome is a fine place to live! I can't complain. I particularly like living here every time I have to drive to Atlanta during rush hour.... We have three remote campuses in the metro-Atlanta area and a large regional software user's group that includes seven private colleges from Georgia and one from SC so we meet all over Georgia! Plus, a trip to the Varsity for a Frosted Orange is a necessity about once a month!

My sister, her husband and kids moved from Dunwoody to Alpharetta and lastly to South Carolina. She says their entire devlopment in South Carolina is made up of people escaping Atlanta. I understand the traffic, crime and politics are running people out in mass. Hummm, sounds just like Memphis.
-
There's not enough money available to make me live in Hot'Lanta...no offense to those of you who live there, but Birmingham is about as big as I ever want. A few years from now, I may go even smaller, if I have a choice. Vgirl...Rome is a nice place!! Actually, we're all lucky here in the South...can ride mostly year 'round, other than those cold rain days, hardly ever any snow or ice...it just gets hotter than Hades in July/August!!
Actually, my goal in life is to become a greeter at the Local Wal Mark...but now they've done away with the smiley face, so I'll have to set new goals in life ;D

I don't blame them at all. That's why we moved to NC a few years ago. Now jobs have taken us to SoFla. Kind of like Atlanta with Palm trees. Already plotting another escape. Teach your kids about self employment.

Had some friends in Atlanta who left for Birmingham (Mountain Brook, specifically). Hope it's not getting overrun--seems every nice place is getting "discovered".
-
Red...yea, more and more people coming here...B'ham got a bad rap back in the 60's with the dogs and fire hoses...oh, it happened...but the attitudes here were'nt what they were depicted to be...I know, I was a kid here at the time. So, everybody still has that picture in their mind when they think of Alabama, and Birmingham specifically. So far, it's a well kept secret, but word is getting out. They're building 350K+ houses around me like there's no tomorrow, and selling them as fast as they're completed. Shelby County (just South of B'ham) experienced 20% growth in the last year. Too many rats in the tank man....
Mountain Brook is a beautiful old area of B'ham...it's where all the rich folk lived when I was growing up, and it's still that way...there are some nice homes on some true "estates"...lot's of big trees, shady lanes....good place to ride, actually. I grew up on the Steel Mill side of town, but the mills have all but shut down now and it's all about Medical Care and Financial Services...big banking area.
Now I wouldn't give you 2 cents for anything South of here, until you get to the beaches of course...everybody needs to experience the Flora-Bama and The Pink Pony at least once in their life [smiley=drink.gif] ;D

San Diego - - - - - America's finest city- - - - - PERIOD
I've been there a few times for business. The last trip was enough for me for a while. [smiley=nervous.gif] In one week, 4 earthquakes, 1 tsunami warning and lots of people at a conference whom had never experienced the ground shaking underneath them! NOT FUN!! One of those shakes was during a presentation and I just thought I tripped over the podium until I saw people filing out like herded cattle!!! Legoland and Carlsbad is nice!
Self-employment...the way to go! Too bad we all didn't figure that our earlier!
-
Hey V,
So you're saying you felt the earth move and that's a bad thing ?
Sheesh, I'll never figure women out ! :D
-
[highlight]Self-employment...the way to go![/highlight]
-
... self employment brings with it many different levels of risk, heartaches, headaches, competition and forever dealing with constant changing business conditions.
-
You can say all of that about working for somebody else as well--it's all the same internal to a company.
-
What I was pointing out is that being self-employed isn't for everyone and not the glamorous/luxory position some might perceive...it can be hard.
Hey, I'm with you. I've never seen self employment as glamorous or luxurious.
I had a part-time business myself for a while, until my supply chain dried up. I tell you, the first time I presented an invoice and got a check was a feeling like I've never gotten from an employers' paycheck. That feeling (to me at the time, anyway) offset the late hours and hassle.
-
I love being self employed.Granted its not as glamorous as some would think, like you all said but the pay off for me is phenominal.Sometimes the hours are long but its worth it in the end.Just my .02
-
Once you have taken a drink from the well of independence, you will never be truly happy, working for someone else again. Sometimes circumstances are such that one must go back, as certain unanticipated changes do sometimes occur. It is my experience, no matter what business you are in, each and every one of them require the same GAAP, and the same amount of effort to be successful, no matter they be Big or small. Want to earn Big Money? Be where the Big Money moves. Want to earn small money? Go where small money moves. There endeth the lesson. Later--HUBBARD
-
Yeah Er' Uh' Hub, Couldn't agree with you more. I went back for a brief stint working for someone and I hated it. It was like going to the joint.I like my freedoms and the fact of the harder I work the more I'm rewarded for it. Later,Q

-
Hey, I'm with you.
-
I guess if you are a professional, doctor, lawyer, with no employees, it could be glamorous.
-
Semiconductors, Ion Implant Equipment Engineer. Sounds different but just a new wave mechanic. Scrub off arsenic build up instead of oil deposits on parts. But the hours are long and the money is short, that is the important thing.
-
I haven't answered to, yet, is the Dept. of Immigration.
Gotta taste of that too....Social Security sent a report on two of my guys with bad names or bad numbers. Called them to see what I was supposed to do. Guess what? I can't check their numbers unless they are hired employees. If I hire them, then I am in violation proposed immigration laws. They better clean that up before they pass any new laws. You're right, it does feel good to sign the check. Also, "at will" employment is the best way to handle most of the issues.
You da man Hub.

In my state as of late they're cracking down real hard on illegals. Most every working trade here is loaded with em. This is only the begining. I know its not the right way to think but who's gonna do these jobs when they clean house. I don't see a bunch of white middle class just graduated boys standing on line to become framers, landscapers ,painters or ditch diggers.Do you?

First off in regards to Naitram's comment. We should all be writing our politicians and demanding they DECREASE the guest worker quota and not increase it. Bill Gates et al: love this because your average qualified Asian guest tech worker will (just as his unskilled Mexican counterpart) work for less money than a similarly qualified American (of any ancestry)
Next, Bush has it all wrong. The Mexicans don't want the jobs most Americans aren't willing to work at. I live in SoCal and I see illegals working as Carpenters, Plumbers, Electricians, Welders, Mechanics etc etc They will work for $15 an hour and no benefits. They start out mowing lawns and move up to these jobs as their friend and relatives do. Which is the American way, BUT, they never become legal because they're afraid of being deported. And there-in lies my complaint. Illegal is illegal is illegal.
-
I'm gonna tell you if this illegal thing blows up we are in for a world of chit in my profession. They better figure out what to do with all the out of work construction managers.i guess it will be us with the tool belts on.Damn I worked so hard not to have to wear the belt again.

I'm with SJ Duke. If I could have a SE for $32 K I'd buy one every year. I am over $55,000.00 and I'm done (yeah sure...).
Profession?
I own my own business. Retail home furnishings, and cabinetry for the kitchen & bath. I was a carpenter all my life (been self-employeed 33 years). The store is in San Jose, as well as a 7,000 page web-site selling home furnishings all over this great country. http://www.willowglen.com
Could use any business, as the economy has me way, way down. I just rolled $170.00 in quarters (see my story about the Wisconsin quarters somewhere in this sector) and will cash them into cash at the bank. This is for the gas to Cripple Creek. I am leaving in 12 days, but actually left (mentally) about 2 weeks ago... See you all there...

Garz, it is not just there. What I now classify as a "qualified worker" would not have even made it as an entry level unskilled idiot afew years ago.

I'm a 16 year self employed secondary heating contractor. What that is is, sales, service and installation of chimneys, stoves and fireplaces. I started out slinging mud and building everything out of brick and mortar. Now it is all pre-fabricated stuff and electronics.
With the constant rise in fuel costs it keeps me busy. My business has the opposite season of most. I'm real busy all winter and slow in the summer. I've learned to save during the winter and enjoy the summer with as much riding as I can get in.
As stated elsewhere in this thread there are ups and downs of being self employed but at this point I don't know if I could handle a "real" job. After being the one in charge for so long and telling like it is (my way) it would be hard to listen to some college grad wet behind the ears.
So if any of you ride with me through a residential area and you see me looking at roof tops, I'm looking at chimneys and writing mental estimates or admiring craftsmanship. :)

Plumbing Contractor
Garz is correct. I've went through help like there is no tomorrow. They know how to do it all until you put them on a job or they can't talk a lick of english and still don't know anything about plumbing [smiley=soapbox.gif]
-
When I find a contractor that shows up, understands what's needed, does the work on time, and everything works when he's done, I use him for everything I can. Then the condomaniacs start wondering if I'm getting a kick-back because I use the same contractor all the time... "Why don't you go out for bids?" I invite them to suggest some companies, and once they try, it shuts them up. I make sure my contractors make money on the jobs they do for me. And treat them as kindly as possible. Just so they'll keep coming back. I've still got Hurricane Wilma damage from 10.24.2005, and it didn't do much damage to us. [smiley=soapbox.gif] Tomorrow's Friday. Thank God.

Ed

Ed...I know what you mean...I was in the HVAC trade for 18 years for The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, so it ain't window units...there are fewer people going into the trades, and those that do don't seem to care about what they do.

Brother Hoist could not attend this evening's festivities, but asked me to post this in his stead B B
Hi, my name is Howie, my CVO Bros and Sis's call me Hoist. I mostly sit around the house and post chit on the CVO website. When the weather is nice, I ride one of my three Harley-Davidson motorcycles. But not too far since I don't have wireless yet and I can't be away from my laptop for long. My wife moved me into the garage about 5 years ago. It's ok, since I have my bikes and the furniture she was gonna toss out after she tossed me. It gets cold in the garage sometimes in the winter and it's hard to type so I start up my bikes and let the exhaust heat up the garage. I guess that's why I am having these fainting spells lately. I don't normally go on this long in my posts on the site, but this seemed like a nice thread to open up a bit.

Actually B B, this is what I did, and will be doing, in real life!
I've been an Executive Sales Engineer for 2 of the 3 major A/C and Chiller Manufacturers (York and Carrier) for the last 25 years. Chillers are large tonnage air conditioning pieces of equipment. I'm now going to work for an Air Conditioning contractor, that a friend of mine started a Chiller Contracting and Maintenance division at about a year ago. So I'll be my old Co's customer now! Payback's a bitch, huh! But I don't burn bridges, have a good relationship with everyone, and will be working closely with them in my new position. My friend Jimmy can't go any further building this business alone, and I'll be his right hand man now, and provide most of the sales, so we can start growing the business together. Eventually, my friend will move up to help run the whole Co, and I'll move up and run the Chiller group. Great opportunity, and I'll be working with very nice, stand up people for a change. Not these Corporate Peter Principle idiots I've been around the last 25 years!
Site torturer (or contortionist) is much more fun though! ::) ;D ;)

When I retired from the Navy I went to work for Denso, an auto part manufacture as a Maintenace supervisor. I lasted almost five years with them, but the 65 hour work weeks were to much for me, and the money was not equal to the work.
2.5 years ago I went to work for a Major Off Shore deep water drilling contractor. I am an electronics and Programable Logics Controler Tech. I really like this job, work two weeks, then I am off at home for two weeks. Pay is very good, and the work is not bad at all.

I've been an aerospace quality assurance manager but for the last 15 years I've worked as an airframe & powerplant mechanic with FAA inspection authorization and FCC G.R.O.L. inspecting and maintaining aircraft from light single and twin engine thru corporate jets to large transport aircraft. The past two years I contracted with L-3 Vertex Aerospace Contract Field Teams maintaining & inspecting AH-64A & D Apache helicopters for the US Army in Kandahar, Afghanistan. For the past several months I've been unemployed and just enjoying my new FXSTSSE2. But as all good things must come to an end, I will have to return to work after the new year.

I need someone to show me the things in life that I can't find
I can't see the things that make true happiness, I must be blind
Make a joke and I will sigh and you will laugh and I will cry

Axe murders are not on the list so they would be OK IF they are discriminating about who.

I'm very proud to have served as a public servant most of my life. Some people would say I am a lazy bureaucrat, sucking the government t, but I've spent most of the time working my a off, underpaid, undertrained, and to the benefit of the public.
Don't judge or be judged, especially from one or two posts on a website.

No, Telemarketing is, well, Telemarketing. Multichannel prospecting could include TM but most folks shy away from this unless it's part of a two-step permission based follow-up for support and the like. Normally, Multichannel would leverage various components of TV, Space, Online, Direct Mail, Alternative Media, etc, as the conduit. CRM (Customer Relationship Mgmt) is the art of understanding and predicting customer needs, and developing the intelligence and infrastructure to automatically reach out to them with timely reminders, targeted recommendations, and incentives. For instance, if customer was a known maintenance DIY'er, a mfr could develop the entire parts list based on various statistical elements and have the entire kit prepared and ready for pickup or delivery. Due to the efficiencies across the enterprise, the mfr and retailer can pass on special savings to the customer creating a win-win. John Deere and Lands End are a couple of examples of those who do a pretty good job in this area. Harley on the other hand is pretty clueless. When you do it right, customers appreciate the convenience and embrace the experience. The key is to avoid paying good money to present an offer that's not relevant, timely, or appropriate to the individual.

I worked for a Natural Gas Co in the north east for 27 years, before retiring and moving to Florida..After 12 months of retirement, I went back to work in the Natural gas industry. I work on live gaslines under pressure. The duty I have is Hottapping steel high pressure lines. I drill holes in live lines through a Tapping fitting to liven up or take out of service adjacent gaslines..I also respond and work on damaged..(blowing gas lines) hit by contractors while doing excavating with out proper line locations...35 years of service, no fires or injuries :2vrolijk_21:

Is that why your code name is Screem? You could of gone w/ stopple but then nobody would know what you're talking about. Being in highways I got to see a lot of big and small lines tapped. Always exciting when gas started to blow. It always got the neighbors attention when they smelled the gas and thought they heard a jet engine. ;)

Guess our department has had so many we just stay back (out of the hot zone) and watch... only get excited when we see the gas guys running around screaming.... then it's time to get worried. :nervous: Nothing like the sound of a leak in a high pressure line though it will definitely get your attention.

Dood. we sure appreciate it when Deptartments work with us, unfortunatley that has not always been the case...recently we had a department deny us access to the hot zone....they saturated the area with water (filled excavated hole with water)...I still had to go in with line pressure blowing and det my squeeze off tools to stop the escaping gas...only now I'm working in mud and water blowing,
That being said...most of the local depts are great to work with...the best ones ask what we need, what they can do assist....we normally like to have them charge a line and help establish a safe zone....and let us do what we do in the hotzone

Hello my name is Jeff. I am the Maintenance Supervisor on an Oil Rig in Mexico. I have been doing this for five years. I work 30 days and go home for 26. When the wife and children don't have me doing projects. I like to go for rides. Anywhere between Southeast Texas and Southwest La. I have been blessed to have a great job. To be able to provide for my Family and have the little extras ( two H.D's) in life. Before working on an Oil Rig, I worked seventeen years in a machine shop as a Machinist in the semiconductor business. Spending time away from my Family has been the hardest part of my job. As I am now 130 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico in the Yucatan . Just a few minutes ago I visited my Wife on the phone. Most of our conversation was about our last Motorcycle ride together and what were we plan to ride when I get home. That right there is enough to hold me over until I get home. Stay Safe.........

Hello, my name is Klaas and I'm selling all kinds of tyres in the Netherlands-Europe. I started this job in '81 and now own 50% of two tyre shops, one in rocking Amsterdam and the other in Almere. I started as a mechanic and worked myself up as a manager.
After 911 GoodYear needed cash and sold us the shops, where my partner and I both were working as manager and sales agent.

It's interesting, I don't think many here (at least, among the respondents) are familiar with the term Investment Banker, or Investment Banking firm.
If I may... (without being tarred/feathered), out of curiosity, does anyone know the difference between a BANK, a BROKERAGE FIRM, and an INVESTMENT BANKING FIRM? And for that matter, any idea of the history?
For those who don't care, change the channel!!!
But.....do you know the difference between a doctor, lawyer and an indian chief! :huepfenjump3:

21 years ago, I started one of the first ten national VA programs to help homeless veterans of our military by providing them with a place to obtain rehabilitative and health care serivces to give them the opportunity to turn their lives around. The best part of that job was being able to see the results through what the veterans acoomplished afte completing the program. Today I am still working with veterans, but as the associate director and business manager of the Mental Health Division of a VA hospital in the Chicago area. I didn't make a lot of money doing what I chose to do, but it has its' rewards when I see the lives I had a part in helping change for the better. :)

Rich,
The heat is something you get used to, the humidity takes a little longer!
The best part of living down here is you can ride all year and only want heated clothing 5 days out of the year.
I don't use heated clothing and still lride.

Having lived in Florida, Virgina, and New Jersey a good part of my life, you do get use to humidity, but now living somewhere with low humidity, I don't ever want to go back. I would like to ride everyday, but also like the change of seasons. We usually get a lot of winter riding in, may be 60 one day and then snow the next day, just depends on the jet stream. If I did go for a no winter area, I still look for low humidity, then heat doesn't feel as hot, and the cold doesn't feel as cold.

I run two businesses, first we own a Mobile Dog Grooming Service called "Doggie D'Tails" and then second I'm the GM of a Ice Skating Rink. I work 8 days a week and sometimes it's just to hard to find riding time. Anyone that has ever worked with the public know that it sucks. I was in the printing business for 22 years until I got up on November 17, 2001 and told Karen I'm done. So we sold that business that was sucking the life out of me and my family and called it a day.

Update to what I do: Last night I bought a Yearling out of the great stud Color Me Smart at the NCHA Futurity Western Bloodstock Sale in Ft Worth. Hope to show him next year in the same and make a good bit of cash.

The area they do all the happy cows commercals is in the Petaluma area, and all but three months out of the year they are in lush green pastures, it's only the cows in the valley area that are in small dry lots. I before getting started in cattle, I owned and bred quarter house myself.

You didn't have a stud for that?
Sorry about that, you left the gate wide open. :o :o :o
In a previous life, included ex, my ex had been into horses all her life. When I met her in high school, she was doing the 4H thing and then she eventually got in to the AQHA circuit. My son, now 31, grew up on horses and did the 4H thing as well. About that time was when we split and I thought that as soon as my son had to do the poop scooping and horse cleaning himself, he'd drop horses like a hot potato. Fortunately, or unfortunately, he didn't. He's married and lives in De Moines IA and has his own training stable. He's been doing horse training since college. The only problem with the horse business is that this is all discretionary money for his customers and when times get hard, they quit the "extra" money stuff. He still has paying customers, but at one point he had all 18 stalls full, albeit I think three of them were his.

I bred a house once, spent the night in jail for drunken disorderly conduct for it too.
Cattle business has it's ups and downs. Never a whole lota ups. Tough way to make a living. Price of a good steak keeps going up but the price of beef on the hoof never seems to budge.
Horse business is funny. When times are bad, average horse flesh becomes a liability to have around. Really good horses with a proven track record always seem to hold value. I've been to all the sales at the NCHA Futurity this past week and you can't believe what yearlings out of the top studs/mares are bringing.

I worked for a guy back in the '80s that had a bunch of very good cutting horses. His stud's breeding eludes me know, but I know it's daddy was a World Champion. This guy's name is Jack Marvel and he lives in Rodney Michigan. I'm not even sure if he's still around in the cutting biz. He used to have Michigan events at his place back then too.
All I know is that when, in that previous life, we would go to the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus every year, I'd always have to go watch the cutting and reining horses. In my mind this was more horse based than political. Although I'm sure some politics played into the reining but cuttings was more black and white, did the horse do it's job or not...
During the time I was around horses, I rode a bit and was Michigan Amateur Champion one year in reining (trust me I say my competition was worse than I was and I wan't very good). When I left that preious life I didn't want to ever sit my arse on another horse.
My son is keeping his head above water right now, but I can't see him every really getting rich doing this. But he does love it very much and I guess if you can do something you're great at and love it at the same time, I'm not going to rain on his parade.

You never know in the Horse Trading business. Last week I bought a Yearling stud colt out of the great Color Me Smart. The NCHA Futurity in Ft Worth has several sales. This little colt was very late in the auction and I gave $2200 for him. The seller was talking about $10,000 being what he figured he would bring during preview. I just got lucky that the one I was after was very late on the auction block and everyone was out of money :orange:
I'll probably make him a gelding and turn him into a Reined Cowhorse. I should be able to put a year on him and if he shows well get $10 - $12,000 for him. That is speculative, risky, a lot of work ...........I LOVE EVERY SECOND

Mike
Mikeytee: Yes i do travel over to Charleston Sc for 3 weeks a month and then either go home to Texas for a week or up to the main office in Everett WA. Yes Charleston is ecstatic on winning the new plant there. It's given the economy a big lift out of trouble! it's still going to be another 2 years before we launch one from the site there. The ground work is in progress now for the new facility. 610,000 SF hangar and several run stations. 6800 people will be employed there at the facility by the airport. It's going to be nerve racking for a while until they get all the traffic figured out and parking. I have been told I will be there until Dec 2010. but I was told in October 2007 that i was only going to be supporting down there for 4 months. Here it is Dec 2009 and I'm still there! lol!
Thanks to all for the support and comments on this great new plane!
